By Christi Sevtap Staff Writer On Dec. 19, Seneca Longterm resident Maude Irish celebrat- ed her 103rd birthday with family and friends. Before moving to Chester in 1985, Irish spent her entire life in the Northern California coastal town of Arcata, where she was born in 1897 as Maude Davis. She witnessed the end of the Victorian era, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, both World Wars and everything in between. For 28 years, she taught pri- mary and junior high school. She knows that much has changed since her time. "No more hickory sticks," she said. In 1921 she married the love of her life, Edward Irish, who was a mechanic, then mainte- nance man, for the California Barrel Co. Together, they had one child, a d ughter named Donna.
