OF FURNIRE & CARPET ONE 2830 MAIN STREET, SUSANvlLLE Z[][] 257-7788 CA LIC 448528 Deputy position filled Joshua Sebold Staff Writer jsebold@plurnasnews.com The Plumas County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved filling a vacant deputy position at its Tuesday, Dec. 15, meeting. Undersheriff Greg Hagwood told the board he received a letter of resigna- tion from a deputy Tuesday, Dec. 8, which became effective the next day. He explained eight officers were currently absent from duty due to long-term injury, disability, disciplinary action or reassignment, with seven of those vacancies being patrol officers. He also indicated eight was a relatively large number, with only 37 total sworn officers including the sheriff, investi- gations unit and administra- tion. "It's created a crisis situa- tion when it comes to mini- mally staffing our patrol func- tions throughout the county," Hagwood said. He added that the position was allocated and funded in his current budget. Supervisor Robert Meacher asked how long it took to recruit and train a new officer. The undersherfff responded that it could take several months, but in this case a reserve officer was ready to fill the vacancy and Hagwood would only have to advertise the position for a week. Supervisor Ole Olsen asked how many officers were on reassignment. Hagwood said there was only one, who was working on communication grants for the sheriff's office and Plumas County Office of Emergency Services. Olsen asked if that officer could be returned to patrol. The undersheriff replied it was technicallypossible, but the grant work the officer was working on was very impor- tant. "Failure to meet deadlines coming in September of 2010 could result in some very, very costly reimbursements to the federal government." Olsen also asked how many officers were away from work because of disciplinary actions. ',One position that has been left vacant due to pending liti- gation," Hagwood answered. tpilee I(eltt becks, ui & mere Pre-School storyt00e Nov. 7th 10am 373 W.
