The Bureau of Land Management says rugged terrain, steep climbs and the absence of devel- oped hiking trails can provide adventure for skilled hiker~ and backpackers. But BLM recre- ation planners advise that the areas are remote and rugged. They are best suited for experi- enced hikers. "We advise anyone heading into remote areas to visit our office for maps and to check on cur- rent conditions," said Bill Knutz of the BLM Ea- gle Lake Field Office staff. "We will provide de- tailed instructions for reaching the best hiking starting points." The Skedaddle Mountains near Wendel and the Fort Sage Mountains east of Doyle offer some of the most challenging hikes and reward explorers with some dramatic vistas. In the Skedaddle Mountains, hikes to Summit Ridge and through James and Amedee canyons follow natural features. There are no trails. Use of topographical maps is essential. To reach the Skedaddles from Susanville, take Highway 395 19 miles east to the junction with Wendel Road. Take Wendel Road south to the Skedaddles. Detailed instructions to hiking areas are available from the BLM off'me at 2950 Riverside Drive in Susanville. Summit Ridge hikers will follow ridge lines to reach the triple summits of Hot Springs Peak. The rewards are excellent views of the Honey Lake Valley and the expanse of the western edge of the Great Basin. James and Amedee canyons afford good canyon bottom hiking and the opportunity to climb onto the western flanks of the Amedee Mountains for expansive vistas of the Honey Lake Valley and Sierra Crest. At Fredonyer Mountain, hikers tain bikers can follow a road that Fredonyer Mountain fire lookout east Lake (this is not Fredonyer Pass 36). Visitors are rewarded with Lake vistas. To get there, take Highway 1: sanville 21 miles. Look for the out sign on the right. About 40 miles south of Susanville, Sage Mountains offer the Wildhorse cellent vistas of the Sierra front see wild horses in the Fort Sage await hikers. Take Laver ty Road 346) about two miles north follow the signs to the Fort Sage OHV head. From the trailhead follow the dian Springs water tank. Park low-clearance or cles at Indian Springs and walk east track road for approximately a signed trailhead. The 2-1/2 mile, ends at a small lake. The trail is a find mineral specimens or scramble uP boulders. Stop by the BLM office for a OHV Area brochure and more The Jesus Springs Trail in the Mountains takes visitors to the tops Sage Mountains. To get there from Susanville, Hackstaff County Road at the Doyle. After crossing the Long Bridge, take the second right on to Ranch Road. About 4 1/2 miles south, goes through private property, but "Access to Public Lands" sign. Follow the road past the residence canyon.
