4C Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Trojans sneak up on Chester to take road wins Greg Knight Sports Writer sports@plumasnews.com The Quincy Trojans boys' basketball team win-loss record achieved dominance over all other Plumas County teams last week as head coach Mike Woodlee's squad edged Chester 62-61 on the road and took a 10-6 overall record. Quincy led the Volcanoes for nearly the entire game; at the halftime buzzer, the Trojans had opened up a 12-point lead thank s in great part to a 13-point run by Brady Rick and buckets from Jake Rick, Crowe Herbertson-Deemer, Erik Schwartz and Tyler Hartline. Chester was not nearly ready to give up, however, as Wyatt Durkin, who was largely quiet in the first half, exploded onto the hardwood for 14 points. Crucial three-pointers by Tanner Counts, Sawyer Durkin and Jason Schlueter also helped buoy the Vols back to within two points of the Trojans. Ifthe first half of Quincy basketball belonged to Brady Rick, the second half belonged to D.J. Davis and Jake Rick. The pair combined for 12 points, including a massive three-point shot from Jake near the end of the third period. With Chester down by three points -- and only 17 seconds remaining in the game -- the Vols put the ball into the hands of Tristan James, who fired off what ended up being a two-point play as time expired, giving Quincy the one-point victory. The Rick brothers led in scoring for Quincy, with Brady scoring 19 and Jake penciling in 12. Davis scored eight and Jakob Grammer and Hartline each finished with five. Erik Schwartz threw up five points and Herbertson-Deemer ended with a de.uce. Brady Rick ended the night with a double-double as well by pulling down 14 rebounds. He also had six assists, three steals and two blocks in the win. For the Vols, the leading scorers were Wyatt Durkin, who finished with 19; Schlueter, as he put up 14; and James, who nailed down 10. After the game, Brady Rick lamented on how the Volcanoes were able to come back against his team from being 12 points down. "It was three-point shots and then they brought in big Wyatt (Durkin) in the second," Brady Rick said. "He kinda got in foul trouble early so we knew it would be tougher in the Second because he was going to be in there the whole time. A lot of credit for us winning goes to D.J. Davis because he controlled the game in the final minutes, The whole team also played exceptionally well." Quincy will travel to Maxwell on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. The next jaunt for the Vols will be Saturday in Loyalton starting at 2:30 p.m. Girls' basketball Quincy 41, Chester 32 The Lady Trojans cruised to an easy 41-32 win over the Lady Vols during their meeting last week in Chester -- and earned the best overall record of any high school basketball team in the county at 10-2. Senior Jasmin Sherman led the Trojans with 19 points. Angel Garrish followed with eight of her own while Taylor Friden added six points in the victory. Quincy's D.J. Davis (No. 10) gets fired up and gets around Vols defender Tristan James to score last week in Chester.
