MIKE TABORSKI Publisher mtaborski@plumasnews.com BUSINESS SCENE SIMULATED BANK ROBBERY TONIGHT In their ongoing effort to secure the safety of both their employees and customers, the Quincy branch of Plumes Bank and the Plumes Coun- ty Sheriff's SWAT deputies will conduct a simu- lated bank hostage takeover tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 27 at around 5 p.m. So, if you happen to drive by and see the excitement, keep in mind it's just a practice drill, nothing more. NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO KEEP YOUR FUTURE ON TRACK. MOONS CLOSES FOR WINTER Citing the soft economy, Moons, the restaurant somewhere in Quincy, will be closing after this Sunday for winter and, according to manager Kristine Irving, should reopen this spring. They will continue to serve both the Lions Club and Soroptimist Club's lunches and are available for special events and parties by request. NEW FIXED HOURS FOR THRIFT STORE The volunteers at Fireside Thrift in Portola have established new, permanent hours for the store. Manager Linda Robertson said shoppers will find them open daily 10-4, closed on Sundays. CHESTER TRUE VALUE'S FIRST Just a year ago Ed Wistos had a personal goal: To inventory a hardware store to serve the vari- ous needs of folks in and around Chester/Lake Almanor. EdwardloneS MAKING SENSE OF INVESTING IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR CUSTOMERS Here's another tip we ran across that is worth sharing: Ever stop to really think about what business you're in? You're in the Customer Service Busi- ness! After all, it is the customer who pays your salary. Not only are external customers impor- tant, but your internal customers (co-workers, other departments, or anyone else who depends on you) are as well ................. Businessesare losing customers every day be- cause they aren't walking the customer service talk. Many businesses aren't treating customers they way they say the will. Remember, "walk the talk" service starts with the first few seconds of the first contact. You get only one shot at a good first impression. So, greet your customers warmly. Start phone contacts with: "Thank you for calling (company)." Start face-to-face contacts with "Welcome to (compa- ny)." Customers take their business where they feel welcomed and appreciated. Consider one very successful business's rather simple mission statement: '~A place where employ- ees want to work and customers want to support." HOMEBUYERS TAX CREDIT EXTENDED The federal tax credit for home buyers that the president'signed into law recently was set to ex- pire Nov. 30, but has been extended until Apr. 30, 2010. It was also expanded to include existing homeowners who have lived in their primary res- idences for five consecutive years out of the last eight years. First-time homebuyers may still be eligible for a tax credit of up to $8,000, while existing home- owners may receive a credit of up to $6,500. The bill also increases the qualifying income limits, and taxpayers can claim the credit on purchases completed in 2010 on their 2009 income tax re- turns. Ask your Realtor for all the details. DEDUCTING HEALTH COSTS Out-of-pocket health costs seem to be going up every day. You can deduct those health care expenses that exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income. It's smart to check a year's worth of bills to document what you've spent. It adds up. Start with your health insurance premiums, including Medicare Parts B and D. Older owners can deduct more of their long-term-care premiums: up to $3,980 for those 71 and older, $3,180 for seniors 61 to 70, and $1,190 for people 51 to 60. Add in co-pays to doctors, prescription costs, eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids and such. The wages of home health aides are deductible. So is necessary equipment like wheelchairs and phone devices for the hearing-impaired. Home improvements that are medically necessary can be deducted, from adding grab bars or widening doors for wheelchair acess to a "prescribed" swimming pool, less whatever the improvement adds to the home appraisal. The Plumes/Sierra coun- ties forum is scheduled for 5:45-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the Sierra-Plumes Rural Elec- tric Cooperative board room, 73233 Highway 70 in Portola. Participants will discuss how to grow the economy and put Americans back to work. The primary focus will be on ideas to accelerate job growth in rural Ameri- ca. Some of the topics to be discussed are: Exploring ways to reju- venate and promote local businesses; Creating jobs by rebuild- ing America's infrastruc- ture; Creating new opportuni- ties from existing ones, such as with value-added agricul- tural products; Supporting job"growth among small businesses; and Preparing workers for 21st-century jobs.
