Mary Wise said David and his siblings would visit Portola frequently and when David was little he used to practice jumping offthe snow banks by their driveway. In fact, David, his young wife and his 2-year-old daughter, along with his siblings and parents, just spent Christmas in Portola Bob Wise, the legendary Portola High School football coach, established a legacy of sportsmanship and athletic excellence. Though the coach has since died, those principles are exemplified in his grandson, David Wise, through his outstanding accomplishments as a freestyle skier. On Jan. 12, the 23-year-old professional athlete was selected to represent the United States at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, for the half-pipe skiing event. "We're really proud of him," said Mary Wise, David's grandmother and wife of Bob*Wise. "He's worked really hard." Mary and Bob came to Portola in 1953. DNET 6414_6825 Blue Star Moms receive donation for banner project The Feather River Blue Star Morns were in for quite a treat last Friday, as two members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars donated $200 to the organization's ongoing Hometown Heroes banner project. The Feather River Blue Star Moms plan to hang banners of American soldiers from Quincy currently in the armed forces. These banners will occupy eight light posts and will be double sided. Steve Jennings and Russ Jennings met Blue Star Mom representative Debra Ozanich at the Dame Shirley Plaza on Jan. 17 to make the donation.. The Feather River Blue Star Moms have other fundraising events taking place in the near future as well. On Feb. 1, the organization will hold its annual enchilada sale. Funds raised from the enchilada sale will go to a group building homes for disabled veterans. The enchiladas cost $10 per half-dozen, and need to be preordered by Jan. 27. Those interested in ordering enchiladas can contact Ozanich at 230-8282. Feather River College plans to help the Blue Star Moms by giving hal the ticket sales from FRC basketball's Feb. 8 game against College of the Redwoods to the organization. Members of the Blue Star Moms will be on hand as well, selling baked goods.
