Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014 5C FRC teams fall to Butte, Shasta James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com This season is not looking pretty for either of Feather River College's basketball teams. Both teams lost two games each last week to drop standings dramatically. The men's team lost 86-80 to Butte on Jan. 22 and 71-68 at Shasta on Jan. 25. The women's team lost 56-43 to Butte and 67-46 to Shasta. The men's overall record dropped to 4-16 and their conference record to 1-5. The women fell to a 5-15 overall record and a 1-5 conference record. "Our conference record is deceiving," commented women's team coach Haley White. "We have competed with every team well, until we go on a scoring drought in the second half. We wii1 be changing the structure of practice to help combat this problem so that we can improve on our record." The men's record seems equally deceiving. Though the team lost five of its six conference games, each loss was within 10 points. Similarly, FRC's team is stacked with great athletes. Maurice Johnson, for example, scored 29 points against Butte. Johnson is hitting an average of 52 percent of his field goal attempts and 76.5 percent of his free throws. Against Butte, Cedric Christian and Aaron Brown also reached the double digits in scoring. Christian scored 13 points and Brown 10. Both teams have four games left in the season. At this point, it's not too late for either team to make a comeback and improve its record. Maurice Johnson flies through the air in preparation for a slam dunk against Butte last Wednesday. Johnson scored 29 points for the Golden Eagles in the game. Feather River College's Kaitlin Boyd takes the jump shot during the Jan. 22 game against Butte. The Lady Eagles lost 56-43. Chester's next game • is at home against Liberty Christian. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. Portola Before losing to Chester, the Tigers took down visiting Biggs 53-43 Jan. 21. Later in the week, Jan. 24, Portola lost 62-56 to Maxwell. By the end of the week, Portola's record. stood at 6-10 overall and 2-1 in league. Portola and Biggs matched up pretty evenly through the first half of the game. Portola led only 27-26 at the half. In the third quarter, the Tigers really pushed their momentum to take a 45-35 lead. Mike Martinez plowed his way through Biggs' players to get near the basket and score 19 points. Martinez also dominated defensively, nabbing 26 rebounds in total. Connor Kennedy scored 13 points, six of which were from three-pointers. Against Maxwell, the Tigers got off to a rough start. Maxwell outscored Portola 25-9 in the first quarter and led 41-24 at halftime. The Tigers came back with force in the second half to outscore Maxwell 32-21, but couldn't close the gap. Martinez was the Tigers' main contributor, once again, with 17 points. Juan Rodriguez scored 14 points and Kennedy 10. "Mike Martinez is playing really good basketball," commented Portola's coach, Tim Brubaker. "My guys play really hard, but we have to learn to play for 32 minutes per night. Every night we have stretches where we lose focus and it is costing us ball games." u & Service tory00 ",.7 dm Residential • Commercial CaU now for immediate appointment n (530) 283.1605 ~ Since 1976 ~ CA.
