12A Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 Feather River Bulletin Fingers crossed for poker run Diana Jorgenson Portola Editor djorge nson@plu masnews.com The Rotary Club of Porto- la's annual poker run is set for Saturday, Feb. 13, at Lake Davis, six miles outside of Portola, and event coordina- tors are crossing their fin- gers that they will get more snow, and not rain, especial- ly not on that day. Fourteen years of maneu- vering through unpre- dictable weather patterns have made Rotarians cau- tious and they have set an al- ternate "storm out" date the following week, Feb. 20, should there be either no snow or blizzard conditions. However, a little falling snow only whets a snowmo- biler's appetite for play, so prepare for fun. Registration is 9-11 a.m. at the Grizzly Store, and the en- try fee is $12 per person. Two or more poker hands per per- son are $8 each at the initial time of purchase. The best four poker hands will win prizes, along with holders of lucky drawing tickets. There are always a lot of prizes at the poker run, but the big draw is for a brand new SkiDoo Summit Everest 800 R. Only 600 tickets are sold, so find a Rotarian to se- cure a ticket soon. Proceeds from ticket sales, along with the proceeds from the quad drawing at the Sep- tember Fly-In Breakfast, go into the Rotary Endowment Fund, set up by the local Por- tola Rotary to be used only for scholarships to Portola seniors. Rotarians will also hold a barbecue at the event, so plan for a fun day filled with snow frolic, good food and the laughter of friends. For more information or to buy a snowmobile draw- ing ticket, call 832-5444 or (800) 995-6057. PUBLIC NOTICES S. Birth Partners offers a 15- hour course in labor, deliv- ery, breastfeeding and early infancy. Birthing is dis- cussed from physiological (natural) and medically as- sisted perspectives, and top- ics cover a wide variety of evidence-based information about pre- and postnatal de- velopment, including the physical and emotional ex- perience of labor, delivery and early infancy for mother and baby; the role of the la- bor partner; skills for having the most positive birth expe- rience possible; and the path to successful breastfeeding. Knowing how to navigate through the dozens of choic- es a parent will face during labor, delivery and the post- partum period can increase positive birth outcomes and reduce the amount of stress parents feel at this most im- portant time in their lives. Birth Partners classes are taught by trained, experi- enced doulas and lactation educators, all of whom are also infant/toddler special- ists. Class instructors are al- so happy to offer referrals to other sources of maternity support as requested. Why take a childbirth class? Evidence indicates that de- livery was less distressing for those who attended child- birth education classes. Classes facilitated positive birth outcomes, including reduction of Cesarean births. A mother's confi- dence in her innate ability to give birth was enhanced; and positive feelings toward the birth, caregivers and the infant were fostered. There was a decrease in the use of drugs during la- bor-including costly and potentially risky epidurals. At age 6-9 weeks, infants born to parents who took classes that included early infant care displayed signifi- cantly better sleeping pat- terns than infants of parents who did not. Attendance at childbirth classes was associated with a 75 percent increase in the odds that a child would suc- cessfully breastfeed Classes are partially fund- ed through Plumas Chil- dren's Council, Plumas Cri- sis Intervention and Re- source Center, and Plumas Rural Services Women, In- fants and Children Program. A $60 fee is charged for nu- tritious snacks and class ma- terials. Fee is reduced ac- cording to a sliding scs, le; classes are free to WIC and other qualifying families. Pre-registration is request- ed. For more information, contact Susie Wilson at 284- 1406, susiewil- son@frontiernet.net, or vis- it mamamentors.com. Is your furnace feeling its age?
