Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 7B CHP REPORT No Control, Jan. 20 Kenneth Baxter, 45, of Reno, Nev., was driving a 2000 Ford F-350 westbound on SR-70 just west of Scott Road at approximately 45 mph. CHP reported that at that time Caltrans had imple- mented the chain controls in the area due to inclement weather, which dropped the speed limit from 65 mph to 35 mph. Due to his alleged unsafe speed, Baxter lost control of his vehicle, then struck a sec- tion of guardrail. Approxi- mately 195 feet of guardrail was damaged. Neither Baxter nor his two passengers was injured. Cruisin', Jan. 21 Tara Boucher, 41, of Janesville was proceeding southbound on US 395 in a 2002 Ford F-150, north of Pozzolan Road. According to CHP, the roadway was covered with packed snow and ice. Boucher had allegedly set her cruise control at 55 mph. While ascending a hill, the vehicle lost traction with the road and began to slide to the left. Boucher allegedly attempted to regain control of the vehicle but was unable to do so. The vehicle slid onto the west shoulder and overturned. No injuries were reported. Spinning, Jan. 22 Guillermo Ruiz, 38, of Portola was traveling east- bound in a 2003 Ford on SR-70 east of the Massack rest area at approximately 50 mph. CHP stated that at that time the road was icy and that flashing signs were in effect. Due to his alleged unsafe speed for the condit.ions, Ruiz's vehicle began to spin out of control. Ruiz attempted to regain control but was unable to do so. The vehicle spun 360 degrees and crossed over the double yellow lines before the right front struck the guardrail. The vehicle continued to spin and the :right rear collided with the guardrail. Ruiz regained control and drove in a westbound direction. Loss of Control, Jan. 25 Laurie Whiteton, 54, of Blairsder was traveling west- bound on SR-70, east of Squirrel Creek Road, in a 2002 Nissan Xterra at approx- imately 3,5--40 mph. CHP reported Whiteton noticed brake lights ahead of her and decided to slow down. As she downshifted, the rear wheels of her vehicle .lost traction and the vehicle began to rotate clockwise while sliding toward the south roadway edge. Whiteton countersteered but could not regain control ofher vehicle as it slid off the south roadway edge and down a steep snow covered embankment. The vehicle overturned once before coming to rest on its left side. CHP reported that the roadway was covered with ice. As Meeks approached an incline in the roadway, he ac- celerated, which caused the rear end o his vehicle to slide to the right. Meeks at- tempted to regain control of his vehicle but could not. The vehicle slid sideways into the westbound lane, off the north shoulder of the roadway and down a steep, snow-covered embankment. The right front of the vehicle struck the ground at the bot- tom of the embankment, causing it to stand up on end and roll. The left side of the vehicle struck several trees, before coming to rest on its right side. During the collision, Meeks and his passenger, Joel Anderson, 23, also of Oro- ville, were thrown about the inside of the vehicle because they were unrestrained. Meek's leg went through the passenger window and was pinned beneath the vehicle when it ctme to rest. Meeks sustained lacera- tions to head and hands and a back compression fracture. Anderson sustained bruises to the right shin and ankle and a ,laceratiofi to his forehead. Slip and Slide, :lan. 26 Joseph Presta, 49, of Reno, Nev. was driving a 2008 Inter- national tractor eastbound on SR-70 , going up the Blairs- den grade at approximately 35-40 mph. According to CHP, t'he roadway was wet from overnight rain and starting to freeze in various locations. Presta saw a vehicle ahead of him fishtail on the ice and let off the throttle to avoid sliding on the ice. As soon as Presta allegedly again hit the throttle after coasting for a few seconds, his truck began to slide sideways on the ice. Presta attempted to steer out of the slide, but the truck jackknifed and skidded to the right causing it to go off the road and over the embank- ment. The truck hit a tree and stopped approximately 50 feet down the embankment. Presta was uninjured. Icy Roadway, Jan. 26 A minor driver and two minor passengers were pro- ceeding eastbound on County Road A23; three miles south of SR-70 in a 1997 Chevy pick- up at approximately 50 mph on the icy roadway. CHP determined the rear tires of the pickup lost traction, which caused the pickup to slide to the right. The vehicle slid off the roadway and overturned on the east shoulder. No injuries were reported. Lost Control, Jan. 26 Kyle Garcia, 20, of Sun Valley, Nev., was driving westbound on SR-70, west of Paxton Road, in a 1989 Chevy S-10 at approximately 55 mph. Garcia allegedly allowed the vehicle to run off the roadway onto the north shoulder, overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle which crossed west and east- bound lanes before colliding into a rock wall on the north shoulder. The vehicle then rolled over onto its roof blocking both lanes of traffic. No injuries were reported,. Deer in the Road, Jan. 26 Heidi Crumb, 29, of Quincy was traveling in a 2010 Subaru SUV eastbound on SR-70, west of Purdy Lane at approximately 55 mph. According to CHP, as Crumb approached Purdy Lane, two deer allegedly ran from the north shoulder across the road. The right front of Crumb's vehicle struck the rear end of the deer. Crumb pulled to the north shoulder and called the police. The deer was found deceased on the south shoul- der of SR-70. No injuries were reported. Black Ice, Jan. 26 Margaret Lotts, 56, of Reno, Nev., was proceeding south- bound on US 395, just north of the Nevada border in a 2002 Chevy pickup at approx- imately 70 mph. CHP determined Lott noticed a spot where another vehicle left the roadway. Lott thought she might be driving onto black ice and lifted off the accelerator, but the vehicle began sliding to the left.
