4C Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Eli Putnam (foreground) prepares last week at the Feather River College baseball field for the opening act of the Golden Eagles baseball squad's 2015 season. Photo by Greg Knight open The Feather River College Golden Eagles baseball team kicked off the 2015 season at Taft College last Friday and Saturday with games against Solano College, Taft College and Barstow College:The Eagles finished the weekend with a 1-2 record as they dropped Friday's opener to Solano by a score of 8-2 and then lost to host Taft by a score of 3-2 in a 14-inning nightcap game on Friday. The Eagles then beat Barstow College on Saturday by a score of 4-1 to pick up their first victory of the season. In the opener Friday against Solano College the Golden Eagles had trouble getting the key hit as they left 10 runners on base and had the bases loaded twice in the first six innings. Sophomore starting pitcher Skylar Haynes also struggled in his season debut as he gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in four innings. The bullpen came in and threw S up four quality innings and freshmen Jace Zampirro and Brad Galisatus combined for three innings of shutout baseball. Sophomore Kila Zuttermeister was the Golden Eagles' leading hitter as he went 3-3 with a trio of singles and a walk in the game. Sophomore Nathan Reynolds added two hits. In the second game of the day, FRC played Taft and lost 3-2 in 14 innings as, once again, the offense struggled to get the key hit. The Golden Eagles' pitching was superb, however, as five pitchers combined to give up only three hits and zero earned runs in the 13-plus innings. Sophomore starter O'Keeffe Hall was outstanding in his debut with six shutout innings while giving up only a pair of hits. Freshman Cody Hoff pitched two shutout innings, sophomore Toby Woods gave up one unearned run in his two innings of work, and freshman Christian II son Charles pitched three shutout innings and was very impressive in his debut, say coaches. Sophomore Mike Hoyes was the hard luck loser as he gave up one unearned run in the bottom of the 14th. In Saturday's contest the Golden Eagles received another outstanding starting pitching performance from freshman Jose Melendez to beat Barstow, 4-1. Melendez went 5-2/3 shutout innings while giving up five hits and striking out four. Freshman Connor Briare picked up the win in relief as he threw three shutout innings, while giving up only one hit. Freshman Samson Abernathy came in to get the final out of the game for FRC. The offense pounded out 11 hits in the game, led by sophomores Eli Putnam and Michael Sanderson, as well as freshmen J.C. Montemayor and Peter Shearer. Next up for the Golden Eagles will be a trip to the Sacramento area Feb. 6 - 8.' i" I East Quincy Appliance Repair Cell: (530) 927-9017 (530).283-9389 www.eastquincyappliancerepair.com Foreign, DomesUc Diesel and 4-Wheel Bruce & Susan Robinson (530) 283-2235 y k,,,.. 2140 E.
