6B Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter We are the frogs that are slowly being cooked At what point does a beard become a beard? One hair? Two? Thirty? Sixty? One can keep shaving, leaving a few hairs over time until it becomes a beard. But at what point do these hairs become a beard? When the person deems it true? When someone notices the new hair on the friend's face, calling it a beard? Another paradox is called "the heap paradox." This states that if you have a heap of sand, taking away a grain of sand will still leave a heap of sand. If you keep doing this, you will inevitably diminish the heap, but it is still a heap ... even down to the point where there is only one grain of sand left. These examples are related to the "boiling frog syndrome." This anecdote has been used as a metaphor to describe many ,::i : , COMMUNITY GREEN PAMELA NOEL situations. Essentially, the logic says that if you toss a frog into boiling water it will leap out, because it is so hot. If however, you immerse it in cold water and slowly increase the heat, the frog will become very relaxed, sleepy and, before he knows it, cooked. The boiling frog story is often used by climate scientists as a metaphor to describe what is happening to us on earth. At what point does something become recognizable or obvious ... and to whom.., and to how many? And then how many people does ittake recognizing something before action really starts happening? "If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed, and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from current levels (400 ppm) to, at most, 350 ppm." Dr. James Hanson, former head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, is one of the most respected climate scientists in the world. When he makes this kind of statement, other scientists and policy makers take notice.., and more should. Civilization developed in an atmosphere of 275 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Because of civilization's need for energy -- oil and coal use, production of food and many other "civilized" functions -- our level of carbon dioxide is now up to 400 parts per million. We are, in fact, the frog who is slowly being cooked. It is happening incrementally, so that we are not aware on a daily basis. Thus far we've experienced about 1 degree of warming, which doesn't sound like much to the layperson. But this 1 degree has resulted in rapid glacier melts and massive weather events. The most compelling evidence may be the Arctic Sea ice. In summer 2012 half of it disappeared. Scientists estimate that the total Arctic Sea ice loss could be as high as 80 percent, threatening species that depend on it for survival, as well as indigenous people. At this point I do not see any coherent plan or direction that our governments are taking.., no unified, conceptual vision and action. I go through periods of time when I am more than extremely saddened by the state of our planet. I often feel hopeless in accomplishing anything to improve our global situation. With the difficulty of maintaining hope, I am constantly balancing this ordinary and conventional reality with an understanding of my own inner state. I ask myself how I can maintain equanimity in the face of such outward calamitous attitudes, conceived in greed and lack of concern for humanity's welfare. We can always hope that "they" will "get it together" in time. Meanwhile, we keep seeing chemtrail jets pouring out chemicals in the sky to try to make rain; the biotech industry attempting to genetically modify our food, using us as guinea pigs in an increasingly suspect experiment; and giant corporations having their way with our legislative processes. Thus the concept of local gives us one of our few hopes. If enough local efforts flourish, they may become that chain that links together many initiatives that could ultimately put pressure on "the powers that be," pushing that number down to the 350 ppm. They may become the many hairs that make the beard.., and hoI)efully keep the frog and us from being cooked.
