n Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017 9A Feather River Bulletin Lauren Westmoreland Staff Writer Iwestmoreland@plumasnews,c om A Reno gentleman had a rough landing at Nervino Airport in Beckwourth at approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14. "The pilot of the Beachcraft single-wing plane was doing a landing at the airport, and it appears that when landing, the tiP of one wing snagged up against a large snow berm. After that contact, the plane basically went out of control and crashed," said Beckwourth Fire District Chief Greg McCaffrey. Care Flight was first to respond to the incident, as they have a base at Nervino, followed by assistance from Beckwourth Fire District, the Plumas County Sheriffs Office, and arrival of Federal Aviation Administration field workers who needed to map out the incident. "The pilot is really lucky to be alive," said McCaffrey. "He was at averagelanding speed when the crash happened, and that is typically about 100 to 120 mph. The pilot had some fairly severe facial injuries and was immediately careflighted to Renown in Reno." The damages to the plane were serious. "It's totaled," McCaffrey said. ".The engine ripped nearly totally apart 'from the plane, and all three of the wheels were torn off." The plane is still on site, having been moved off of the runway after the FAA closed down airport . operations for about four hours after the crash to investigate the incident. The front of the single-wing plane is severely damaged after it made contact with a snow berm when attempting a landing.
