INSIDE SECTION C: FEATURING THE ACTION AROUND PLUMAS COUNTY ................................................ : .......................................................................................................................................................... i i. FROM THE SPORTS DESK . GREG KNIGHT Sports Editor sports@plu masnews.com It pays to be a winner Early in my life, my father was an officer in the U.S. Navy. Part of his career' involved working with the Naval Special Warfare community in San Diego and Norfolk, Virginia, and when he would return home after a long deployment, he would always tell me, "It pays to be a winner." I didn't quite get it until many years later when I was in high school and, years after that, served in the military myself. With that history in mind, it will come as no surprise to readers that I am a believer in athletics and strongly devoted to the concept of winning. While many will take the stance that athletics should be subordinate to academics, I can tell you that I hold no such illusions. In fact, the words of the late Rick Tolley, head coach of the Marshall Thundering Herd, come to mind yet again. "There's only one thing they judge us on... There's only one thing people remember. And it ain't how we play the game. Winning is everything." How true. To that end, I believe winning teams need coaches that teach players how win, or at the very least try to win, more games than they 10se. This is probably why I was slack-jawed and dumbfounded when I reported that the Plumas Unified School District gives hiring preference to employees of the district above all others, regardless of whether they had played or previously coached in a given sport. To me, it is a ludicrous policy and should be done away with the next time the district meets with the bargaining unit of the Plumas See Sports Desk, page 2C Greenville sophomore Justus Eaglesmith (No. 25) logs 41 points against the Grizzlies and earns a double-double with 14 rebounds. Eaglesmith, Meyers combine for 59 points in win over Loyalton Greg Knight Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com It took 17 years to get there but, in the end, the Greenville Indians boys' basketball team stayed perfect in the Pioneer-Mountain League, taking an undefeated league championship for the first time since 1998 with a 76-63 victory over Loyal[on, finishing the regular season at 17-7 overall and 10-0 in PVL standings. The game was anything but a walk in the park for the Indians as the Grizzlies pushed back hard over the course of the 32-minute battle. The mettle of the Grizzlies was also enhanced by the sheer rowdiness,of their fans -- so much so that one Loyalton parent was ejected from the game after he berated game : official Tony Campa from thg stands over a call he .... apparently disagreed with. In the opening minutes of the first period both squads were even until Greenville pulled ahead on a 19-10 score. Loyalton battled back, however, fighting to outscore Greenville on a 19-18 run in See Greenville, page 2C '14 DODGE RAM 2500 HEAVY DUTY CREW CAB 4X4 WHEELS WEST PRICE: STK #1863 VIN #265811 * PRIOR RENTAL .J/Vest -0101 [PEN 7 DAYS A WEEK 1303 MAIN ST.
