4C Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 Quincy dominates Portola, Maxwell in Mountain-Valley League showdowns Greg Knight Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com The last time the Quincy and Portola boys' basketball teams met on the hardwood, back on Jan. 27, the Trojans walked away with an 89-51 win that determined which of the two teams would remain undefeated at 3-0 in Mid-Valley League standings. The win for Quincy came after the offensive push of DJ Davis and the defensive mettle of Brady Rick were able to overcome a Tiger unit that was unable to gel, despite four of head coach Tim Brubaker's players scoring in double digits. Even with the steely taste of desperately sought revenge fomenting on Portola's lips, the Tigers once again fell to the Trojans last week in a 78-61 defeat -- and saw Quincy move to 6-0 in league, just two wins away from an undefeated record in the MVL. The win came courtesy of the fiery effort of brothers Brady and Jake Rick, a duo that combined for 49 points and 22 rebounds over the course of the game. Brady's offensive push, which came off 12 buckets, seven free throws and a shot from three-point distance, led the Trojans with 36 points. Jake's 15-point scoring effort came off a three-for:seven showing from beyond the arc and a trio of field goals. Though Quincy led Portola for the majority of the game -- and by as many as 18 points at the halftime break -- the Tigers were able to narrow that lead to just six points in the third period. After the game, Brady Rick said he knows why that happened and how his teammates got their groove back for the win. "We went up by 18 by making the big plays," Brady said. "We used the momentum of the game for us and not letting them get any. It sort of slipped early on but we managed to get big shots from guys like DJ (Davis) and Jake (Rick) and all the other guys." DJ Davis, a junior for the Trojans, said eliminating Portola's main offensive threat, Juan Rodriguez, was a major key to winning the game. "We took out their big man, Rodriguez, early in the game," Davis said. "After that, we focused of offense and defense and did almost everything right. We made sure we stayed ahead the entire game and that is how we beat them." Taking a page from his brother's intensity playbook, Jake Rick got a little too high-strung for the officiating crew in the final minutes of the game, drawing a technical foul for celebrating a little too brashly after a booming three-point shot. "I guess I got called for staring one of their players down after that shot," Jake said. "It really wasn't a big deal." Quincy head coach Mike Woodlee said he was pleased with the way the game turned out, as well as the level of play his team is exhibiting late in Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter . i " Quincy's Brady Rick (No. 3) drives around Portola's Dom Vukobradovich (No. 14) on his way to a total of 36 points in the win over the Tigers last week.
