Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, "The Lost Child of Philomena Lee," "Philomena" focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock -- something her Irish-Catholic community didn't have the highest opinion of-- and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn't allow for any sort of inquiry into the son's whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son. The film is Oscar-nominated for best film, actress, screenplay and original score. Local favorite Mare Winningham also has a starring role. This 95-minute dramedy is rated PG-13 for some strong language, thematic elements and sexual references. "12 Years a Slave" is confirmed for March 7 - 10 at 7 p.m. Friday - Monday, 4 p.m. Sunday. This frontrunner for 2014 Best Picture Oscar is based on the book by Solomon Northup that was considered a "best-seller" at 30,000 copies back in 1853. "12 Years a Slave" is based on an incredible true story of An all-star cast convenes in "The Monuments Men" to bring to life the story of the platoon tasked with rescuing art from the Nazis in World War II. one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the 12th year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life. The all-star cast also includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti and Alfre Woodard. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epm quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared. The film features the vocal talents of Will Ferrell, Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett. "The Monuments Men" is tentatively scheduled for Denim & Diamonds raise funds for foundation Save the date for Plumas Health Care Foundation's second annual Denim & Diamonds Dance Party, set for Saturday, March 22, at the Veterans Hall in Quincy. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and is best summed up "throw on your best pair of jeans, add some 'bling' and come have a good time." Guests can wear their denim or wear their diamonds or both! And faux diamonds are perfectly acceptable. Local group Stratus is on deck to provide live dance music. The first Denim & Diamonds Dance Party took place in 2013. The fundraising event was the brainchild of then high school senior Madison Hokanson. Hokanson planned the event in collaboration with Plumas Health Care Foundation to meet her senior project requirements. It went over so well that members of the Foundation added it to their fundraising repertoire for 2014. Admission is $20 per person and includes appetizers.
