2C Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter FRC basketball teams end season with losses James Wilson Sports Editor orts@plumasnews.com Both the Feather River College men's and women's basketball teams finished their seasons with losses at Butte College last Thursday. FRC's men let one slip past them to lose 78-64, and FRC's women fell 74-54. This season has been less than ideal for both teams. The loss dropped the men's record to 4-20 overall and 1-9 in conference play. The women's record fell to 6-18 overall and 2-8 in conference. For the men's team, the loss to Butte marked its eighth consecutive defeat. The FRC women's team won its previous game against Lassen, but lost the five prior to that. In the men's game, the Golden Eagles played go.od basketball throughout the first half. The Eagles were making opportunities for themselves and scoring at a high percentage. At halftime, FRC was up 41-36. In the second half, however, the Eagles turned the game over with turnovers. FRC tallied 25 turnovers compared to Butte's 11. Butte took advantage of this, and went on a 20-2 run to take the lead 56-43. After that, FRC couldn't catch up and Butte went on to win it. Maurice Johnson was the Eagles' high scorer with 25 points. Johnson also sank the only three three-pointers for the Feather River College's Reuben Nwondo moves the ball down the court in a game earlier this season. Nwondo, a sophomore, played his last game as a Golden Eagle on Feb. 20 against Butte. Though the Eagles lost 78-64, Nwondo scored 22 points. Photo by James Wilson Eagles. Reuben Nwondo got in the mix with 22 points. No other major contributions were made from the Eagles' roster. Details of the women's game have not been recorded, though FRC women's coach Haley White commented that she's recruiting for .next year already and has five commitments. i Volunteers plow ahead James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com One advantage to the exceptionally warm winter Plumas County has been having is it allows people to get a head start on outside work normally done in spring. The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship has taken full advantage of the weather, as is evident in the work that has been done recently to the Mount Hough/South Park Trail Project. GIRLS B-BALL, from page 1A league record. Chester upped its record to 4-20 overall and 1-11 in league play. Greenville took the lead early in the game. Brooke House and Hannah Allen racked up points for Greenville, to lead 16-15 at the half. Greenville's passing game fell apart in the second half, however, and Chester took advantage of it. Greenville turned over the ball multiple times in the third quarter, and Chester was spot-on with its shooting to outscore the Indians 16-2 and take a 31-18 lead. Greenville couldn't make up for lost points and Chester took the win. The volunteers have been focusing on the Spanish Traverse and Spanish Ridge trails, both of which start at the big swimming hole near Oakland Camp in Quincy and connect to Banana Flat, an intersection that connects the Cascades Trail to South Park. An SBTS crew has gone through the trails with an excavator, widening and flattening out the trails so they're more user-accessible. The volunteers have been going in after the excavator and working on finishing work to make the trails up to par for multiple user groups. On March 1, the SBTS will hold one of its volunteer days, when members from the public can come and lend a helping hand and help build these trails that are made to last. The stewardship will provide tools, breakfast, a sack lunch and instruction at the site. It is suggested that volunteers bring a backpack, layers, a hat or sunglasses, work gloves, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. Volunteers are to meet at the big swimming hole near Oakland Camp at 9 a.m. Saturday. There they will be split up into groups and led to the work sites.
