The tournament includes men's and women's singles brackets, men's and women's double brackets and a mixed doubles brack- et, in a consolation format. Play starts each day at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Please help make the fundraiser a success by signing up ear- ly. Photo by Shannon Morrow Buchanan reaches state championships The Chester High School wrestling team accom- plished another first at the Northern Section wrestling tournament in Redding last weekend. Clayton Buchanan became the first sophomore from Chester to ever qualify for the California State Wrestling Tournament in Bakersfield, which begins this Friday, March 5. Buchanan was seeded eighth at the Northern Sec- tion tournament in Redding, where he had two impres- sive wins. In his second match, Buchanan defeated second-seeded Zeke Andrate from Foothill High School, 8-5. Buchanan then beat third-seeded senior Ryan Corbin of Sutter, 7-5. In the finals, Buchanan was matched up against top- seeded Nashawn Garret of Chlco High School, who is also ranked number-one in the state. Despite fighting hard, Buchanan was defeat- ed by a fall in the second round. Buchanan started wrestling at the age of five, coming up through the ranks of the Chester Youth Wrestling Program. Buchanan didn't always have the best technique, not- ed by his grandfather, but he was full of grit and vigor and was always on the at- tack. With lots of determination and hard work, Buchanan has come a long way. Now he is on his way to Bakers- field to test his skills against California's top 40 wrestlers in the 103-pound weight class. Chester has produced at least one state qualifier four of the past five years. Aron McCulloch and Dan- ny Hulsey, the only juniors on Chester's wrestling team, were each one point away from making it to the medal rounds last weekend. They are determined to come back next year with hopes of making it to the state finals, as well. Chester's wre'stling team did very well this year. With only one senior on the team, they won the Shasta Cas- cade League title and their third Division IV Section championship in a row. "They wrestled with de- termination and persever- ance," said Chester wrestling coach Tom Rogers. Need help NG If it's :i ng we II find Jlio can.
