Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, March 10, 2010 5A Earthquake damage in Talcahuano, Chile. Former Quincy resident Tara Turner lived across the street until a month ago when she and her family moved from sea level to another house on a hill. A powerful tsunami followed the massive 8.8-magnitude quake that hit the South American nation Feb. 27. Photo courtesy Louise Young Tara Turner, a 1982 Quincy High School graduate and the 1981 Sweetheart of the Mountains, now lives in Chile. Following the recent earthquake there, she and her family evacuated on a navy vessel from a military base in Talcahuano, where her husband, Francisco, is the head of security. Photo submitted QUAKE, from page 4A It makes you feel guilty for having it, but when you remind yourself that your husband is involved in the peace and order of the region -- armed and or- dered to shoot looters and wor- ried about the arsenal supply for a country's security-- you don't feel so bad to have a few liters of water. Boarding the ship happened very fast; there was no time to tell Francisco we were leav- ing. No cell phone service and he was up to his neck in work. Our problems had solutions and he was worried about ex- plosives, keeping explosives from detonating. I kept Jelling everyone I saw, "Please tell Francisco that we are going to Valparaiso; that Captain Reyes has the car keys and Lieutenant Leverton has the house keys." Besides wanting our Mary Kate to be safe from outbreaks of hepatitis, we knew Francisco had no time to dedicate to us, and if we were away from the area he would have one thing less to worry about. What did I feel? Scared. Re- lieved. Grateful. Confused. Guilty. However, at no point did I break down, and I know I was a help to many in small but significant ways, nonetheless. Though it sounds corny, An- nell and I were very pragmat- ic and I feel proud of how we handled the ordeal. Part of me wanted to deal with it and prove to have grace under pressure as Hem- mingway used to say, and as we were navigating north I had spells of feeling like a coward. The going gets tough, and Tara bails out. We arrived in Valparaiso safely and I have been wel- comed with open arms in the home of my dear friend, Veronica Oelckers, with Mary Kate, and Anneli has been welcomed in the home of Har- ald and Ximena Sievers right 10"75 % OFFI Catch our Spring Cleaning Sale Saturday, March 20 Only! Thank you, all of you, for your messages and kind thoughts and prayers. Right now I am focused on the news and helping in the efforts to send supplies down south. I just went to the super- market to buy Clorox, dia- pers, water and canned foods to send down. When I go back (who knows when?) I can be of help to those who need to re-build in- frastructure. Right now- peo- ple need items of survival. Seeing Hillary Clinton here in Chile as she announced your aid to us made me feel so happy. Thank you, all! Before I close, people are guestimating it will take six months to get our corner of Chile back to some sort of normalcy. Francisco is fine, exhausted and focused on this huge task. Those of you who know him have no doubts about his ca- pabilities. He will be a big part of Chile's rising back'up. Hugs to all ... love to you and keep good thoughts! Richard K. During the past 26 years, we are proud to have built more than 70 homes and 100 garages in Plumas County, not to mention the hundreds of remodels, additions and insurance repairs we've done as well. With the change in the economy (specifically, fewer new housing starts), my business partner (and son) Donavon and I knew we had to change our business model. We're not going anywhere, and we still build new homes, garages and commercial buildings. So, in the past year we found there was a real need to assist homeowners in making their existing homes more efficient, attractive and valuable. We've helped lots and lots of people with all kinds of projects that might have only taken 15 minutes= to several days or weeks to complete. And, if we couldn't do their job, we'd make sure to connect them with some- one who could. It's that kind of service and satisfaction that will help take us through our next 25 years!!!
