lOB Wednesday, March 10, 2010 Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Spur of the Moment performs at Words & Music in Quincy Spur of the Moment re- :turns to the scene of the !crime so to speak at Words & Music in Quincy Thursday, March 11. Doors open at i7 p.m. and no-host coffees, teas and libations will be available. } The featured artist portion begins at 7:15. Admission is !still $3. ! Spur of the Moment in- icludes Ken Cawley, "Cactus" Bob Cole, Joe Tomaselli and Chris "Prairie Flower" Stevenson. This occasional assemblage of longtime musical friends first per- formed as a "band " about 16 years ago in Quincy at Words & Music. While each of the members pursued their individual mu- sical roads (collectively play- ing with more musicians than you can shake a stick at), in this incarnation the : group has not strayed from the cowboy, old-timey, Old West music they all enjoy. In essence they are four people who really like each other and like to play this music together. In the last 16 years, Cactus Bob and Prairie Flower have provided more than their fair share of local color at their Rock in the Road camp at Yosemite's Strawberry Music Festival, in addition to play- ing with bands on the main stage. The two have also recorded several CDs, as has Tomaselli. "Then there is Ken Cawley," commented Plumas Arts Director Roxanne Valladao. "I can barely think of a band that he's not likely to get asked to play with. Since he retired, Ken is living his dream, playing as much as he can around these parts and even stretching out for a month here and there in Austin, Texas." Tomaselli tells us they have "all aged well. Chris and Bob and Ken are grandpar- ents and I am still raising teenagers." In the last eight months or so the band has begun to take themselves a bit more seri- ously, taking jobs in Colum- bia, at the Jack Russell Sa- loon and in the Sonora area at several gigs, as well as lo- cally at the Quincy Farmer's Market last summer. Just before this Words & Music performance they will play as one of the headliners at the Boulder Creek Blue- grass & Old-Timey Music Fes- tival about which Tomaselli quips, "It must be a pretty small festival if we are that close to the top of the list." But small would not be how we describe the evening's entertainment as Spur of the Moment brings its members talents as musicians, song- writers and comic charm to Morning Thunder once again. Join your friends, neigh- bors and a diversity of local musical and spoken word tal- ent for an evening that will certainly be recalled with a smile over the next decade. Words & Music is a place for musicians and writers to share their talents with a very receptive crowd. Open stage (it is often called open mic, but there are no micro- phones used at the venue) will follow the featured set. Any aspiring poets, musi- cians, storytellers, actors or performers are encouraged to sign up at the door for a five- to seven-minute time slot. All music performances must be acoustic only, with no electri- cal instruments or sound equipment allowed. Original work is always encouraged. Words and Music is an acoustic music and spoken word program which has been sponsored and facilitated by Plnmas Arts since 1989. Plumas Arts is designated annually by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors to serve as the local represen- tative to the California Arts Council's State-Local Partner- ship Program. Incorporated in 1981 as a not-for-profit agency, Plumas Arts provides the region with a variety of cultural and educational pro- grams that enhance both the soul of the creative arts and the local economy.
