"Stylized: A Slightly Obses- sive History of Strunk & White's The Elements of Style" by Mark Garvey Since its first edition in 1959, "The Elements of Style" has been a staple for English teachers and aspiring writers. Garvey takes fans and foes of "the little book" inside the sto- ry of its making, from William Strunk's self-published guide for his writing students at Cornell (where E.B. White en- countered it for the first time) to its near apotheosis as an ar- biter of American prose style. Garvey explores the friend- shipbetween the two men; White's relationship with the sharp-eyed editor, Jack Case, who thought to turn one of his essays into "Elements"; and the conflation of White's style with The New Yorker, for whom white wrote for most of his career. Garvey is an unabashed fan of "The Elements of Style," and his narrative is inter- spersed with reflections on the book bywell-known contem- porary writers. He also in- cludes some witty correspon- dence between White and the many readers-- some fans and some scolds -- who wrote to him about the book over the years. Garvey also takes on the book's critics, but seems to prove their point (the most common of which is that "Elements" is a guy thing, having its roots in Victorian conceptions of manliness and morality) by quoting just one female writer. Yet the prickly fact remains that Strunk and White were right about so much, from Strunk's oracular admonition "Omit needless words" to White's more introspective ob- servation that writing "is the Self escaping into the open." Delaine Quincy "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan This is a very nice short read. It only took me about an hour to get through it. And it is a nice size to carry around to remind us when shopping and eating out. if you read "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan you got all the theory, science and history that this book pares down to 64 "rules." Most are things we know are best for us to do but don't really live by. Like, cooking your own food instead of relying on prepack- aged food and spending more to buy less. In other words, buy your food at co-ops and farmer's markets. They often carry products with better nutritional value and that are more filling. I liked the short "rules" with small bits of information to back it up. Some were things we re- member our mothers and grandmothers saying. I re- member my grandmother say- ing "your eyes are bigger than your belly" to everyone in our family if we left food on our plate. Of course, now it's prefer- able to actually learn to do that very thing. My best memory is when she would sing "turn the water in the sink, everybody have a drink" whenever we said we were thirsty, as of course water was and is the best fluid we should consume ... oh and it's just as good from the "tap" without the extra packaging and potential haz- ards of the plastics etc.! Members of the group lost cattle, had damaged wagons, defended themselves against Indian attacks, and suffered injuries or death before they arrived in the Sierras. This novel is an inspiring tale of tragedy you won't be able to put down. A powerful read that I highly recommend.
