8B Wednesday, March 18, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter New owners bring passion to repair shop busine James Wilson Staff Writer jwilson@plumasnews.com When Levi and Patty Pence bought Hi-Tech Frame & Finish from longtime owner Mark Tande, they knew they had found their place. The two took over the business Jan. 1, and said they couldn't be happier. The business has successfully operated in Plumas County for over 25 years. "It's awesome. It's been a fun experience," said Levi. The new owners bring with them experience and passion to the shop. For as long as Levi can remember, this is what he has wanted to do. "I've just always wanted to be a painter," he said. "Collision repair and painting is just kind of the field I got.into." Levi started working in body shops almost 10 years ago, when he was 13 years old. He got a job with Schuyler Collision Repair in East Quincy and quickly soaked in all there was to learn. In 2007, at 16 years of age, Levi started working at Hi-Tech for Tande. Though Levi is now the owner, Tande plans to stay on at the shop. The folks at Hi-Tech Frame & Finish say they offer all collision repair and restoration services at competitive rates. Hi-Tech also offers painting services for a variety of surfaces -- not just cars. Levi mentioned jobs he's done on fuel tanks, boats and motorcycles, to name a few. A service Hi-Tech recently started offering is powder coating for smaller parts. These include motorcycle frames and rims. The crew at Hi-Tech will apply an electronically charged powder to metal objects, then bake them in an oven Levi built. The result is a smooth finish that is tougher than paint. Painting cars, however, is Levi's passion. That, he said, is why he got into the business .... Levi said he is happy to take on jobs of all sizes. What really separates Hi-Tech from the competition, Levi said, is the quality of work he and his co-workers do mixed with exemplary service. "We offer a lifetime warranty on all of our repairs and paintwork," he noted. "If it PROFILES IN BUSINESS HI-TECH FRAME & FINISH fails, bring it back and we'll fLx it." Hi-Tech's busiest time of year is wintertime. Levi said he notices an influx of customers coming in for body repairs when there is gnow and ice on the ground. "We mostly do collision repair," Levi said, "That's our bread and butter. That's what our customers need." Patty noted that Hi-Tech is willing to work with all insurance companies, to make sure the customer doesn't need to pay any more than necessary. A myth Levi wants to dispel is that insurance companies will only pay for work to be done at certain shops. "Insurance companies will tell their customers they can go to 'this shop in Chico or this shop in Reno,' but it's the customer's choice. They can go anywhere they want." This myth has taken money out 0fthe county. "It is an issue when insurance companies send their customers out of town," said Levi. "They send them to 'direct repair shops' that use cheaper labor rates and cheaper parts. The insurance company wants it as cheap as possible." Levi explained that many of these cheaper places have far lower quality services than the ones he offers; additionally most of those shops do not offer warranties on the work they do. Hi-Tech Frame & Finish is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special appointments outside business hours can be arranged by calling 283-0191. Levi pence gets to work applying a new paint job to this truck. "We offer a lifetime warranty on all of our repairs and paintwork. If it fails, bring it back and we'll fix it."
