6C Wednesday, March 19, 2014 I~UlleTin, .Kecorcl, Progresswe, Heporter James Wilson Sports Editor Quincy's track team started its season with a bang March 12, at the fourth annual Norm MacKenzie Friendship Meet in OroviUe. Quincy competed against several larger schools in higher divisions, but came out ahead in multiple events. "Overall, we were proud of the effort that every athlete on our team put in," commented Quincy coach Dan Hanna. "I think we have a really strong team this year." The Trojans proved their strength, not to mention their speed, with three gold placements and two silvers. At the time of writing, several Quincy athletes even sit first in the entire North Section, above Division I and II athletes. At the Oroville meetl Division H Quincy scored more team points than most other teams there. Dale Morgan placed first in the 200-meter dash, coming in at 24.27 seconds. Morgan also placed third in the 400-meter with a time of 56.85. Che Rubalcava-Cunan took third in the 200 in 24.88 and second in the 400 in 56.59. Shawn Hughes, who has eyes on the state championship, took the gold in discus with a distance of 150 feet, 6 inches. Hughes was only 4 inches short of breaking the school record and also currently leads the North Section. Rachel Hanna represented the varsity girls with a gold placement in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.97 seconds -- three seconds away from the school record -- and second place in the 200 in 28.81. Hanna also took second in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Craig Martynn rounded out the team's efforts with second place in the 110 hurdles. Martynn ran and jumped the hurdles in 18.79. "A Division I coach came up to me and told me how impressed he was with our team," continued Hanna. "This should be a really good year with a lot of records broken." ii if! i i: :!::/( } : A The Quincy track hurdle posse gathers around last week after performing extremely well at the Norm MacKenzie Friendship Meet in Oroville.
