CliP highlights distracted driving awareness month The month of April has been designated National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The California Highway Patrol plans to use this opportunity to raise awareness statewide of the dangers of distracted driving. The Quincy Area CHP is taking the opportunity to alert local citizens in advance of this concerted effort that they might be adequately prepared for the zero tolerance enforcement of distracted driving during the month of April. Officers will enforce hand-held cellular telephone and texting laws as well as other vehicle code violations. Distracted driving includes texting or using a cellular phone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading (including maps), using a navigation system, watching a video or adjusting a radio, CD or MP3 player. "Because text messaging requires visual, manual and cognitive attention from the [driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction," said IBrodle Mitchell, CHP Quincy iArea public information iofficer. "At any i given moment z during daylight hours, over 800,000 vehicles are being driven by someone using a hand-held cellphone. But distraction occurs any time that you take your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, or your mind off your primary task: driving safely." Local CHP education efforts leading up to and during the month of April include the CHP radio report each morning on KNLF and a special emphasis at the monthly teen driving class, "Start Smart," at the Quincy CHP office. This class is open to the public, but requires pre-registration through the Quincy CHP office at 283-1100. "Though it is the responsibility of all of us who drive to help keep the roads safe," said Mitchell, "reckless and distracted driving is the No. 1 killer of teens in America. In fact, 16 percent of all distracted driving crashes involve drivers under the age of 20." For many more staggering statistics and educational tools regarding this topic, see "As always, both statewide and locally, our goal here at the CHP is your safety," said Mitchell. "Whatever the distraction that you might face while driving, remember our slogan for this campaign: 'It's not worth it!' Let's work together to make our roads a safer place to be." Those with questions or who, would, like additional. information may contact Mitchell at 283-1100. Your Neighborhood Lending Experts! Holly... Thanks for an exceptional 9 years! Julie Newman, senior environmental scientist (specialist) with CDFW's North Central Region, invites bird enthusiasts to express interest. "This is a wonderful way to get up close and personal with this lovely bird," said Newman. "And, it's a great opportunity to work with the young people in your life who are interested in birds." The program is part of a long-term nationwide banding study staffed almost completely by trained and dedicated volunteers. The purpose is to estimate modern band reporting and harvest rates and it is only part of a larger study designed to produce comprehensive nationwide estimates of harvest and survival rates as input variables for population models of mourning doves on a national level. "For volunteers, it is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience vith wildlife. It can also be an f exciting family project for summer break as the banding study is held from July 1 to Aug. 20 each year," said Newman. "There will be a mandatory training in April or May. We are trying to set one up in Plumas County if there is enough interest." For more information, see "We need to increase the number of birds banded in Plumas County!" said Newman.
