Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, March 26, 2014 13A Quincy students encouraged to make good choices Laura Beaten Staff Writer ; Ibeaton@plumasnews.com "If I talk fast, you listen fast," motivational speaker !Mr. Brown told Quincy High i School students at a "Be the i Change" assembly March 20. i"If I talk slow, you don't : listen." Brown gave an energetic i: and upbeat talk to students and staff regarding making good choices in life. "I choose i to care about others, my : world and myself." Lots of choices have been : made for us, Brown said. And : many of those choices greatly impact our lives. We can't ! help it if we grow up in a home where our parents use drugs and alcohol. Brown didn't grow up with a father. "I'm not playing the victim role. Reject the victim : role." He told students to ! make their lives better by the i power of their choices. "Make choices looking up i to your future, not down to i your feelings." Brown told many stories of students who i didn't think about their "future when they opted for immediate gratification. He told the story of two kids in eighth grade who had :sex and the girl got pregnant the very first time. Before the end of his seminar Brown gave the kids an assignment: to take one thing from the seminar and put it in their "invisible backpack." That backpack is all the pieces of wisdom they learn from teachers, parents, friends and life that may not seem so important at the time but one day could prove to be of huge importance. "I can't make you do anything," he said, "but I can influence you to think about your choices." Proceeds will benefit the student body and concessions sales will go directly to the sophomore class. All are welcome to come join in the festivities.
