6A Wednesday, April 4, 2001 School News Feather River B;J~er Rive Teqri ]ola Edito ?ortol ;triers By Victoria Metcalf Staff Writer It was early spring. The yard at Quincy Elementary School (QES) was filled, not with the sounds of children playing, but the whine of a power saw and hammering as a storage shed went up. The small wooden structure is designed to store three- wheelers and other equipment for the kindergarten classes. It all began when the gazebo, formerly located in the kinder- garten play yard, no longer met state specifications. According to QES Principal Bruce Williams, the gazebo was great for a number of years, its second story serving as a play area, the underneath area for storage. Williams said they consid- ered upgrading the structure, but that proved to be too expensive, so down it came. Torn apart over a period of weeks during the summer, the structure also proved to have some rotting supports. But with the structure gone, it became apparent that kindergarten needed storage room for its outdoor equip- ment. Turning to the PTA, Williams said that organiza- tion donated $1,200 toward the materials for a storage shed. With the funds in hand, Williams then contacted the Quincy High School construc- tion class, headed up by instructor Rick Weaver. Once the materials were purchased, members of the class went to work construct- ing a shed last week. Williams said the new stor- age shed will be painted blue to match the trim around the main building.
