Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Wednesday, April 9, 2014 15B Florist takes pleasure in pleasing customers M. Kate West Staff Writer chesternews@plumasnews.com Little did Vicki Mason realize that when she departed the Southern California city of Ventura in 1978 to head north seeking personal adventure, she would someday become a prominent businesswoman in the community of Chester. Yet March 2014 was a landmark month for Mason, as it marked the 10th anniversary of the opening of Sonshine Flowers. "I was born and raised in Ventura and moved up here as sort of an adventure; I wanted to do something different," Mason said. She said Plumas County became her home base after friends of her parents bought the St. Bernard Lodge. "I called them up and asked them if I could have a job," she added. She arrived and began working as both a waitress and a bartender and within several months had even more incentive to make her home permanently in the area. "I met my husband Luke two months after arriving. We opened the lodge; he and his logging buddies would come in. Soon he asked me out and we have been together ever since," she said. About Sonshine Flowers The same independent spirit that had Mason trekking north those many years ago still exists today. "I am an independent florist. What that means is I'm not affiliated with Teleflora or FTD But that doesn't mean I don't do wire-outorders .... Imost certainly provide that service for my customers. "When people hear that you are an independent florist they think you can't do wire-outs because you are not affiliated with a larger flower distributor. That's simply not true," she said. Mason said she does wire-outs for customers by using her shop credit card. "It's actually better for me to talk directly with another shop owner to define what it is the customer really wants in a wired arrangement," she added. The Main Street business offers customers a variety of services including silk and live flower arrangements, silk sales, glassware, house and vegetable plants, all occasion PI.OFILES IN BUSINESS SONSHINE FLOWERS Owner Vicki Mason Address 212 Main St. Chester Telephone 258-4543 Winter hours Mon- Fri, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sat, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Summer hours Mon- Sat, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Website flowerarrangementschester.com Social media Facebook.com/sonshineflowers Sonshine Flowers owner Vicki Mason enjoys the challenge of fulfilling each client's vision of the perfect bouquet.Photo by M. Even if it takes a while I get wonderful notes talking about how my service made their day special and it makes me feel good. I constantly get feedback from customers who have flower arrangements made for sick friends. Sometimes it's as simple as, 'Your arrangement was wonderful and it made my friend feel good,'" Mason said. She. said her clients also ...... Facebook her. She then shared a note from a grateful client that read: "Thank you so much for all your help and support to make my wedding so amazing. You took my dream vision and made it a reality and I will never be able to fully thank you. You are fabulous. Hope to see you again soon." Sonshine Flowers success "I believe our success is fully founded on our good reputation. People know that I care and that I'm reliable. "In a variety of situations I often work late or on weekends and have even been known to drive to Reno for a special flower," she said. She defines customer service at Sonshine Flowers as a "friendly with a beyond helpful" approach to serving clients. Looking toward the future, Mason is considering making some changes to the business. "We have thought about expanding the garden section of houseplants and will be looking for a new supplier with more variety. "In the springtime we also do herbs and usually bedding plant like pansies, violas and marigolds. As I have done in the spring for the last three years, I like to stock vegetables that will grow in our climate," she added.
