Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, April 23, 2014 lSA 'Big Fix' to neuter cats Laura Beaton Staff Writer Ibeaton@plumasnews.com In November 2013, a coalition of animal advocates banded together to embark on a two-year grant-funded program to manage the cat and dog population in Plumas County. They launched operation "Big Fix" with a goal to spay and neuter 450 companion dogs and 500 companion cats by Nov. 1, 2015. In less than six months, the goal to fix companion dogs was met. Thanks to the PetSmart Charities grant obtained by High Sierra Animal Rescue's Chuck Franck, and the other coalition members -- Friends of Plumas County Animals, Plumas Animal Welfare Society and Plumas County Animal Services -- 450 dog owners were able to have their pet fixed for a nominal administrative fee of $10. During that same period, 255 cats were spayed or neutered for a nominal administrative fee of just $5. That means another 245 companion cat owners may still take advantage of this generous offer. A pre-authorization application must be completed in order for cat owners to obtain a voucher for spay and neuter services. Once the application is approved, a voucher is mailed to the owner and the vet provider will collect the $5 fee when the procedure is performed. For more information and applications, contact coalition partners HSAR, 832-4727; PAWS, 283-5433; the shelter, 283-3673; or Friends, 283-1345.
