4C Wednesday, April 23, 2014 Uulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter FRC baseball retains lead despite losses to Butte James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com The Feather River College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Butte College on April 19. The Golden Eagles narrowly lost the first game 6-5 before losing 9-7 to Butte later in the afternoon. FRC didn't have to worry too much about the losses, as the Golden Valley Conference title is clinched. FRC's conference record dropped to 18-5 with two games remaining. Butte's conference record was bumped up to 15-8, too far behind FRC to possibly win or share the title. What as significant about the Eagles' losses to Butte was that the will affect their berth seeding when it comes time to determine who plays whom and where in the playoffs. However, FRC is set to host the regional playoffs May 2 - 3. In the first game against Butte, FRC got a one-run lead early in the first inning, and stayed ahead the majority of the game. The Eagles were up 5-3 in the seventh inning, before Butte got a three-run rally to take the lead and ultimately win the game. FRC's pitching was a little off its game. Feather River rotated through four pitchers who, combined to walk five batters, while the defense committed five errors. On the other hand, however, FRC only allowed three hits and struck out 10 batters. Brandon Erickson opened on the mound, pitching into the sixth inning. Joel Duggins took over for four batters, then Cameron Fanelli faced two, before Kody Kuhlman closed out the game, striking out three of the seven batters he faced. Butte held the lead over FRC the entirety of the second game. The Eagles had a five-run rally that really helped out in the seventh inning, and evened the score 7-7 in the top of the eighth. Butte scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain its lead and take the Win. Michael Sanderson was the star hitter of the game. With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Sanderson grand slamred ou(to left field, bringing himself home along with Eli Putnam, Nathan Reynolds and Henry Rondeau. The Golden Eagles will play their last set of games in the regular season Thursday, April 24, against Shasta College at FRC. The fst game of the doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. Feather River College's Michael Sanderson rounds the bases during an Eagles game earlier this month. Last Saturday, Sanderson hit a grand slam during the second game of a doubleheader at Butte College. Despite the four-run contribution, FRC still lost 9-7. FRC also lost the earlier game 6-5, but still retains the top spot in the Golden Valley Conference standings.
