Among the many activities and events is the Quincy Star Follies, brainchild of Lisa Kelly. She has been a part of this engaging and entertaining community event for years. "The cast has been gearing up for weeks and we are all excited about the variety of songs spanning many epic musical eras and genres. We'll be back on stage at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds May 17 and 18, and want to thank our audience in advance for supporting students and the arts," Kelly said. Kris Miravalle, president of the Feather River College Foundation, expressed her delight with the project. "The Quincy Star Follies started out as the Feather River College Foundation's main fundraiser, which supports projects such as the Community Host Program. This program offers support and guidance to FRC students during their college experience in Quincy. "Many students are from out of town or even out of state and the great thing is that the Follies has turned into a perfect opportunity for integrating the college kids into the community and the community into the college. "We are very lucky to have lots of local school kids participate in the show, and it is very rewarding to see them work together with the FRC students and other members of the community. It is such a fun event to be a part of, and we really appreciate the support of the community and special grants like the TUPE, Tobacco Use Prevention Education, and the 4-H Revolution of Responsibility." The Follies is not only about dancing and "singing" (lip-syncing), it is also about diversity. The hundred-plus members of the cast enjoy getting to know one another, encouraging each other, coming up with creative ideas for the numbers in the show and breaking down barriers in our everyday lives. The sense of camaraderie is a stepping stone toward building community and offering healthy, happy choices to kids of all ages -- even adults who enjoy bringing out their creative inner child. Supporters are many, but we especially thank Don Hertel, event director of the San Diego Convention Center and original Follies producer and director, for volunteering his expertise and showing us that it really is possible to "herdcats." We also thank Bruce Mulligan for the TUPE grant money. The youth members of the cast are encouraged to talk about making healthy choices and create a short documentary and routine that encourages tobacco use prevention for all. Everyone works very hard and is very dedicated, including the planning committee, comprised of volunteers who all bring great ideas to the table. "We, too, come from different backgrounds and have different strengths. Our meetings are full of laughter and problem solving and this is what we bring to the show. The Quincy Star Follies is awesome," said Sara Frigo, committee member, "and we can't wait for another really great show!" For information, call Kelly at 283-9900. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for kids under 13. They are available at Bank of America, Moon's Restaurant, Carey Candy Co., Graeagle Associates and at the door. Two performances are offered each night: 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Serpilio Hall at the fairgrounds. Beer, wine and desserts will be available.
