4C Wednesday, April 30, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plurnasnews.com The Feather River College softball team ended its season April 18 with two losses to Shasta College. The Lady Eagles lost 6-4 the first game and 6-1 the second game. FRC ended its season with a 5-28 overall record and 4-16 in conference. Needless to say, this wasn't the Golden Eagles' best year on record. The program faced some unique challenges thisyear it normally doesn't face. According to FRC's athletic director, Merle Trueblood, the season record was mainly due to a lack of time to get this year's team together. Head coach Meredith Aragon was hired at the beginning of the school year with only seven players to start, and eventually built the team to 13 players. "(Aragon) didn't get an opportunity to recruit," said Trueblood. "Despite that, she banded the girls together to form a team. Just wait; next year's team will be much better." Despite the record, some big accomplishments came out of the season. "We were very on, offensively, this season, and I'm very proud of all they did," said Aragon. "We faced some adversityand overcame it." Four players on the team were named second-team all-conference last week: Katie Barnes, Jenna Geyer, Emily Larzabal and Sydney Womer. FRC's hitting was above average as well. In doubles, the Eagles were seventh in California out of 83 teams. Aragon is wasting no time between seasons to strengthen her team. So far, Aragon has nine new players committed for next year's team with 20 more she's working on. Committed players include Kayla Mitchell, Kaylen Uken, Mikayla Mclanahan, Cierra Harper and Portola's own Taylor Prosser.
