2C Wednesday, May 2, 2012 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Portola edges Quincyagain Shannon Morrow Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com The Portola and Quincy baseball teams had another close contest last Friday, April 27, when Portola over- came a seven-run deficit to win 13-11. The teams had a similar game against each other a month earlier, when Portola came from behind to win 11- 10. In last week's contest, played in the pristine ball- park at Feather River Col- lege, the Quincy Trojans opened the scoring with a single run in bottom of the first inning. Portola tied the game briefly with a run in the top of the second inning, but then the Trojans gained a sizable advantage with five runs in the bottom of the second. Quincy added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-1 lead. The Portola Tigers got back into the game in the top of the fourth inning with six runs. Each team added two runs in the fifth inning, and then Portola took an 11-9 lead with two unanswered runs in the sixth inning. The Tigers added two in- surance runs in the top of the seventh inning, which paid off, as Quincy scored one last run before the game ended. Both Portola and Quincy totaled 12 hits apiece, and every Portola batter regis- tered a hit. Will Marquette led Porto- la's offense with two hits, three RBIs, two runs and a double. Davidson Borgmeyer and Clayton Sears also claimed two hits and one run apiece, and Sears added one RBI. Klint Williams captured three RBIs and one double, and Ricky Lowdermilk earned three runs. Mario Montemayor was Portola's starting pitcher and earned tw, o strikeouts in two innings. Williams then worked the mound for four innings and earned the win for the Tigers, giving up five hits and three runs, while striking out five. Lowdermilk pitched the final inning, striking out two for the save. Statistics were not avail- able for Quincy. Portola, with a 14-4 overall record, hosts Esparto for a doubleheader this Friday, May 4. Quincy, at 6-11 over- all, hosts Los Molinos Tues- day, May 8. Portola's Davidson Borgmeyer dives back to first base as a throw comes in to Quincy's Matt Beeson last Friday, April 27.
