All of us have the right to go wherever we like for our medical care. Indian Valley Health Care will have other doctors and will survive with the caring of peo- ple like Lavonne and its hard working employees. Ron Mack Crescent Mills Dave Keller must either be terribly naive or he thinks you are. After reading his piece -- "Racism in Plumas County? It's True" (April 25), my response is for Dave to "wake up and smell the cof- fee." His "surprise" at the fact that there are racist people living among you is shocking. Why do you think some of you folks moved to your neck of the woods? Yes, we have some of the same kinds of racist jerks as your local motel owner is, liv- ing here in the Grass Valley area, but we deal with it and don't try to feign shock when it happens. Can you spell di- versity? My biggest disappointment about Dave's article is his last paragraph, which includes "...but as long as we do not challenge our neighbors whenever they act like unedu- cated fools and treat our visi- tors the way this businessman treated the visitor in question, we're all hurt by it." What bet- ter way to challenge your racist neighbors than to print the names of jerks like that I Doing Business As: FICTITiOUS BUSINESS NAME STATEMENT No, 2001-94 (Expires 4-t 2.2oo6) The following person(s) is/are doing business as: Taylorsville Fuel, 4401 Main St., Taytorsville, CA 95983. There is no challenge to racism when the racist re- mains anonymous. The ball was dropped by you, Mr. Keller, and by your newspa- per. The surprised tone and the lack of journalistic courage left your article meaningless. Tom Dyer Grass Valley Shop at I eee Recently there has been a lot of talk about "shop locally." I have a recent experience to relate to this. I was in a craft store in a neighboring city and purchased some yarn for a project. It was a large project and I had to purchase about eight skeins of yarn. The price I paid was $4.29 a skein. About a week later, I was in the Paper Stuff store here in Chester and found the exact same yarn and brand, but a different price. Here, the price was $3.99 a skein. So, neighbors do check our local merchants before you go else- where. We do need to support our local merchants. Beverly Erdos Lake Almanor Big deal I'm so happy [ could spit. Got a $2 refund from the De- partment of Motor Vehicles to- day. That's because I just paid a $36 license fee on a utility trailer that used to cost me $12. Topping that off, a recent TV news broadcast showed that each Social Security and S.S.I. recipient will be getting a check for about $17. Do we have any idea what kind of imbeciles run our gov- ernment? Does anyone under- stand how much more it costs us each day and year, due to idiotic decisions made by those who are so highly edu- cated? If you don't, then you should think about it! Look at the D.M.V. refunds. They admit they are and have been raping every car, truck, trailer, boat and all other peo- ple who must register with them. Then they add Insult to injury by issuing minuscule refund checks. I know, some checks will not be $1 and $2, but into the hundreds of dol- lars. It makes no difference what they are. W hy not,sim- ply reduce the rates ,to What they were and quit collecting so much in the f' st place? Ob- viously, our state officials do not know that checks cost money--it costs money print- ing them, putting them in en- velopes and paying postage on them. Just think how much more money you would get if they wouldn't throw it away and just reduce your fees! Look at the Social Security refund. Before last September, over eight months ago, imbe- ciles miscalculated the cost of living increase by a few hun- dredths of one percent. Now they've figured it out and are going to send out checks. Ain't that neat? However, they real- ly are saving your money that way. Many of those folks have moved, died or suffered some other misfortune, so the checks will never be cashed anyhow.
