As Mullen neared the high school tennis courts at a speed greater than 45 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol, a dog in the car moved under Mullen's feet. While Mullen was distracted by the dog, the car drifted onto the West shoulder. Mullen veered sharp!y to the left, losing traction. The vehicle slid backwards off the road onto the west shoulder where the rear end struck a wooden fence post. There were no injuries. Luke Medeiros, 19, of Quincy, and Melissa Kalbfleisch, 18, of Reno, were transported to Plumas District Hospital after the car Kalbfleisch was driving struck a guardrail. The accident happened at 1 p.m. on Quincy Junction Road, north of Clear Creek Road. Medeiros, who was initially unconscious according to the California Highway Patrol, suffered a lacerated forehead and other abrasions. Kalbfleisch reportedly sustained abrasions to her left collarbone and knee. According to the CHP, Kalbfleisch was wearing a seat belt. Medeiros was not. The accident happened after Kalbfleisch said she tried to roll down the right front passenger window to remove a wasp that was inside the1987 Honda.
