Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Bulletin, Progressive, PinePress, Record, Reporter IGH in The Chester High School varsity boys' golf team won the Division III golf champi- onships held at Plumas Pines Golf Course Tuesday, May 11. The day began with snow on the ground, but play got underway by 12:30 p.m. The top two teams from the Feather River League, Mid Valley North League and the Mid Valley South League participated, along with the top individual golfers from the three leagues. Parker Newsted of Portola turned in the best score of the day with a 76. Newsted and teammate Eric Miller, who finished with a score of 90, qualified for the sectional tournament next week at Fall River Golf Course. Players from Esparto, Mercy and University Prep also moved on, along with the first-place Chester team and the runner-up Redding Christian team. Chester won the team competition by two strokes over Redding Christian. In third was Liberty Christian, followed by Portola, Esparto and Los Molinos. Chester coach Bob Brock- way was very happy with the result, after losing by three strokes last year and winning in 2008. "This has been a tough year," said Brockway. "Even with all of the late snow, our nine guys kept at it, trying to qualify for the top six spots. "I would like to thank Amanda and Mt. Huff golf course for letting us practice there, along with the Almanor Bowling Center for indoor golf and Lake Almanor West Golf Course for letting us use the driving range. "Bailey Creek hosted a fundraiser for us, and Gary Kluge and Jim Broyles helped with new golf bags. We hope to do well next week against the top players from Divisions I and II, but this is already a great year for us." Freshman Jacob Angelis turned in the low round for Chester with an 87, followed by Topher Taylor with an 88, Nathaniel Brockway with an 89, Harry LeSeur with a 92, Keith Wann with a 109 and Zack Dalby, whose 122 did not count. For Portola, Newsted's 76 and Miller's 90 were followed by Lico Quintana with a 95, Tyler Atkins with a 96, Justin Russell with a 135 and Nasty Jawwad with a 138, for a team score of 492.
