Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Wednesday, May 20, 2015 7C . Second race of season at American Valley Speedway .. Saturday night races at the American Valley Speedway in Quincy give IMCA Modified drivers and their teams the opportunity to win jackpots in two points races held simultaneously. Promoters from Quincy and SusanviUe have scheduled four points races at the two tracks for a separate jackpot for the winners• The first race was in Susanville on May 9. Last Saturday night's race had the normal points in the AVS schedule. The next dual points race in the IMCA tour will be Saturday, May 30, in Quincy. The series continues in Susanville with the Fourth of July race at the Diamond Mountain Speedway• The final Susanville-Quincy IMCA tour race is in Quincy on Aug. 1. Saturday night's races began with the Mini Stocks. Of the four cars competing only one veteran remains as other veterans moved into other classes• Veteran Lary Whitebird won both the heat race and the main. Rookie Kyle Belli is a strong competitor in car 56. Billy Gibson, of the Olschowka-Blackwell race team, took third• Jozay Hartman celebrated her 18th birthday with a fourth-place finish. Brittney Nieman is in her second year in the Hobby Stock class• Shayna Nieman is in her first year after driving a Pro Stock in the past. Newcomer Lance Bain, who won the first race, was behind veteran Joe Blackwell for the checkered flag. The Olschowka-Blackwell race team has a car in each class• Joe Wirtz, one of the first to compete in a Hobby Stock car, came in third. The Hobby Stock has developed in the last two seasons and has been an answer after the economic downturn. At the finish of the IMCA Modified main it was Raymond Benkowski, of Yuba City, pounding on the roof of his car as he won the jackpot. He had taken third in his heat race. He appeared to be the long shot with many locals recording better times. Quincy's Jeff Olschowka was 4.258 seconds behind him for second. Susanville's Riley Simmons was 4.757 seconds behind for third• Quincy's Chris Nieman was in fourth with Susanville's Matt Murphy in fifth. Of the 14 cars starting the race only nine finished. The last of the points races for the double jackpots is Aug. 1. For more information call 283-2175 or visit americanvalley speedway.com. ,.... The Golden Eagles came from behind twice in this must-win game, but in the end the hosts used a series of Feather River miscues in the 10th inning to claim the best-of-three series in two games in front of 389 fans at Euless Park. The Rams (35-9) now advance to the final four, featuring the top two teams from the northern California junior college ranks along with the top two southern California squads. Fresno City used an error, two walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball to score two runs in the top of the 10th to break a 7-7 tie (Feather River was the home team in this game). The Golden Eagles hoped for one more miracle comeback in the bottom of the inning and almost got it•after Nathan Reynolds reached on an error and Eli Putnam singled, but a strikeout ended the final threat and FRC's season. The heartbreaking finish means Feather River's season comes to a close at 32-12 on the year. That marks the seventh season under head coach Terry Baumgartner that the Golden Eagles have won 30 or more games, and it was their best record since the 2012 season (32-8)• This playoff contest was a wild one, with the Rams taking an early 4-1 in the third inning, chasing starter Connor Briare. The Golden Eagles had scored their run in the second on an RBI single by Rex Campbell. But Feather River then sent five runners across the plate in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Reynolds blasted a two-run homer and David Rapanot brought in two more Golden Eagles with a base hit. Fresno City came back with three runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two Feather River errors to reclaim the lead (7-6)• That margin held all the way into the bottom of the ninth, and Six Feather River College volleyball players take part in a signing ceremony as they prepare to move on to four-year colleges around the nation. From left: Jessica Jackson, Nina Holmes, Abbie Mikelson, Stephanie Ovitz, Alanna Watt and Marinda Thomas. Photo by Greg Knight FRC volleyball sophomores sign letters of intent Greg Knight Sports Editor sports@plumasnews.com The six sophomores who helped lead the Feather River College volleyball team to a 2014 final four appearance signed their national letters of intent to play at four-year institutions during a ceremony at FRC last week. The six -- Alanna Watt, Abbie Mikelson, Stephanie Ovitz, Nina Holmes, Marinda Thomas and Jessica Jackson -- all have chosen to continue their volleyball and academic careers and will play for NCAA and NAIA schools around the nation. It was an outstanding two seasons for the sophomores of the Lady Golden Eagles; the squad celebrated two undefeated seasons as Golden Valley Conference champions, earned a California Community College Athletic Association all-academic team award in 2013 and was the only team in California recognized that year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as an all-academic team." Aside from going undefeated in 2014 as well, the team, led by head coach Sarah Ritchie, wasthe only squad to make it to the final four without dropping a game and took second place in the CCCAA Coast Conference in sand volleyball, which is in its inaugural season at FRC. "We are soproud of our girls and all they have accomplished here at FRC," Ritchie said. "They are an extremely talented and very hard-working group. We know that they are going to do amazing things at their next schools•" the hosts were just one out away from the win. But Michael Sanderson kept FRC's season alive with a single and Mikey Rita walked to put runnei's on first and second. With the Golden Eagles down to their final strike, Garrett Powers singled to score Sanderson and knot the score at 7-7. After the fateful top half of the 10th, Feather River's season ended with two runners on base and the Golden Valley Conference MVP (Gage Matuszak) at the plate. He fanned. "we gave it a good run," Baumgartner said afterward• "We didn't play our best defense or pitch well today, and you would like to be able to do that in a game like this. But we had a great season and I am proud of all of our guys." Feather River had six errors in the contest. Reynolds and Campbell had two hits each to lead the offense while Brad Galisatus was the most effective of five pitchers with 3.2 innings of shutout work. Normal starter O'Keeffe Hall (9-3) came out of the bullpen in the ninth inning and took the loss despite not giving up a hit or an earned run.
