1UC Wednesday, May 26, 2010 Bulletin, Progressive, Record, Reporter Sign up kids for football Sign-ups for Feather River Youth Football are happening soon. Sign-ups in Portola will be June 2, at C. Roy Carmichael gym from 4-7 p.m.; and in Quincy Wednesday June 2, and Monday, June 7, 6-8 p.m. at the Quincy high school cafeteria. All interested students need to bring a copy of their birth certificate and a parent or guardian. Cost is $100 at sign-ups, $125 after June 7. Pay- ment plans are available. Typical weight restric- tions do not apply to the youth league. Before the first practice, students will need a sports physi- cal and medical release. For more information call Bill Abramson, 283- 2410, or Steve Heskett, 832-4575. To add a child to the pre-season list, call Abramson. Age groups for teams will depend on sign-ups. Campgrounds beginning to open sporadically Some campgrounds on the Plumas National Forest in northeastern California have opened while some at higher elevations remain covered with snow. Open campgrounds in- clude those at Lake Davis and Frenchman Lake near Portola, Feather River Canyon, Strawberry, Feath- er Falls, Rogers Cow Camp, , and Milsap Bar on the west side, Snake Lake and Red Bridge near Quincy, and An- telope Lake east of Greenville. Higher elevation camp- grounds remain covered in snow and are inaccessible due to snow depth: Lakes Basin, Bucks Lake, Silver Lake, and Little Grass Val- ley. Hiking: visit Feather Falis or Bald Rock and make sure to take plenty of drinking water when hiking. Trails in the Lakes Basin and Bucks Lake Wilderness areas are still covered with snow. For more information about recreation opportuni- ties and specific site condi- tions, contact Feather River Ranger District, 534-6500; Challenge Visitor Center, 675-1146 (Fri/Sat); Mt. Hough Ranger District, 283-0555; Greenville Workcenter, 284- 7126; Beckwourth Ranger District 836-2575; Supervi- sor's Office, 283-2050; or visit the Plumas website, fs.fed.us/r5/plumas. For campground reserva- tions at selected sites, call (877) 444-6777, or visit the website recreation.gov. Check forecasted weather before traveling as spring mountain conditions are changeable. Always com- pletely extinguish campfires with water and keep pets leashed. Leaving camp- grounds in good condition for those to follow makes for a memorable recreation ex- perience.
