14B Wednesday, June 3, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter PG&E promotes Dam Safety Awareness Day In recognition of National Dam Safety Awareness Day, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. urged those living and working below dams to recognize the signs era potential dam breach and to have or update existing evacuation plans. PG&E has 170 dams in Northern and Central California. The reservoirs behind these dams are used primarily for generating hydropower and are generally smaller than multiyear water storage reservoirs. PG&E representatives said the company takes its role as steward of these waterways and its hydroelectric system very seriously and always keeps the safety of its customers and general public in the forefront of all it does. National Dam Safety Awareness Day occurs May 31 of each year to commemorate the failure of the South Fork Dam in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889. The dam failure resulted in the loss of more than 2,200 lives and was the worst dam failure in the history of the United States. National Dam Safety Awareness Day was created to encourage and promote individual and community responsibility for dam safety, as well as to provide information on what steps can be taken to prevent future catastrophic dam failures. For 30 years, the federal government has been working to protect Americans from dam failure through the National Dam Safety Program. NDSP, which is led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is a partnership of states, federal agencies and dam operators like PG&E to encourage individual and community responsibility for dam safety. "Dam safety and integrity are the most important elements of our hydroelectric program," said Randy Livingston, PG&E's vice president of power generation. "PG&E inspects and maintains its dams according to strict safety guidelines, ensuring structural integrity under even extreme conditions. Nonetheless, it is importance to be aware of potential flooding and have an evacuation plan should a dam fail." The nationwide initiative by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is for hydroelectric dam owners to raise awareness among those who live and work downstream of dams and is not a reflection of dam conditions. Two years ago PG&E held open houses and began marling brochures to customers annually to advise them of the need to recognize the signs of a potential dam failure and to identify an evacuation route. These brochures are sent to households and businesses in areas where, in the very unlikely event of a dam failure, they could be impacted by rapidly rising water before they receive notification by local emergency agencies. PG&E has also developed plans with state and local emergency agencies to warn the public in the unlikely event of a sudden dam failure. The utility regularly engages in drills and exercises with emergency agencies. In addition, PG&E also places informational posters in campgrounds, parks and other recreation areas in flood inundation zones throughout its service area. Participants for all trips meet at the Chico Park & Ride west lot; contact leaders to arrange alternate meeting sites and times. Eagle Rock and Humboldt Summit Lassen National Forest Saturday, June 6, 8:30 a.m. Participants drive up Highway 32 to Butte Meadows area to see some insectivorous plants. The group will then drive through Jonesville and take Humboldt Road (roughly graveled) about 3 miles to the summit at 6,600 feet. Participants will check rock outcrops for fiat-stemmed onion, buckwheat, steerheads and spirea as they hike 1.5 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail to Eagle Rocks at 6,800 feet. At the top will be pink rockfringe and Cycladenia. Returning, the group can make a short side trip to the top of Humboldt Peak at 7,087 feet. Leader: Gerry, 893,5123. Butterfly Valley Botanical Area Plumas National Forest Saturday, June 13, 8:15 a.m. The group will drive about 80 miles northeast via the Feather River Canyon to the visitors' parking lot at Mt. Hough Ranger Station to meet members of the Shasta Chapter and then caravan a short distance to Butterfly Valley at 2,900 feet to 3,700 i feet. Butterfly Valley Botanical Area is designated i a protected area due to the abundance and diversity of plant life, including four species of insectivorous plants, 12 species of orchids, 24 species of lilies and nine species of ferns and fern relatives. Expect to hike in some wet areas. Leader: Linnea, 345-6229. Valley Creek Special Interest Area Plumas National Forest Sunday, June 21, 8:30 a.m. Participants will drive 68 miles past Oroville to the trailhead on La Porte Road (County Road 120). They will hike an easy 2 miles to a park-like ravine among old-growth conifers with a rich understory of herbaceous plants and shrubs. The loop trail drops 200 feet into the ravine where the group hopes to see the forest floor blanketed with a variety of blooming flowers. Leader: Janna, 228-0010.
