Their names were announced June 2, during the monthly lun- cheon meeting. Laura Leiss became interest- ed in the medical field after her 17-year-old son was para- lyzed in an accident. Witness- ing his spirit to pursue his ca- reer desires while living in a wheelchair, Leiss was inspired to make a difference in other people's lives through nursing. She returned to college in 2006, and graduated from the Feather River College Licensed Vocational Nurse program in August 2009. She has been working as a ward clerk at Plumas District Hospital since January 2008. Sierra Wood is a Quincy High School graduate. She is in her third semester at the California State University of Chico School of Nursing. Last semester, Sierra job-shad- owed in an emergency room, an operating room, the gas- trointestinal unit, trauma and intensive care unit and with respiratory therapy. She will graduate in December 2011. For the 2010 - 11 academic year, the PDH Volunteers re- ceived 24 applications. Eligi- ble applicants must reside within Plumas Hospital Dis- trict boundaries and plan to pursue or be currently en- rolled in a health-related aca- demic program. Award selection is based on academic performance, let- ters of recommendation, fi- nancial need and answers to short essay questions. Since its inception, PDH Volunteers have donated more than $300,000 to the hospital. Currently, The Bargain Boutique thrift shop on Lawrence Street in Quincy is their main source of funding.
