16A Wednesday, June 23, 2010 Feather River Bulletin OUR CUSTOMERS LOVE THIS SALE! VETS, from page 15A often did home visitations Mondays and Fridays, see- ing people who couldn't get to the office. "But if you're asking if I put in 40 hours a week in the office, not every week." "And your contract allows that?" Simpson asked. Austin told her it did. "We might have to look at contracts," Simpson com- mented to her fellow super- visors. "You know we don't get many complaints about the veterans department though," Graeagle and East Quincy Supervisor Ole Olsen replied. Indian Valley and Feather River Canyon Supervisor Robert Meacher agreed, thanking Austin for working with the board to save mon- ey in hard times. Olsen commended the vol- unteers who help the depart- ment function with practi- cally no paid staff. After the board's lunch break, a group of veterans gave a stirring series of re- marks in support of the de- partment at the public com- ment section of the budget meeting, as they do every year. Ingstad told the veterans that Austin told him there wasn't enough work in the department for two people and assured them "there is no intent to cut the ser- vices." Later ill the day, Public Health Director Mimi Hall said her department could help answer the phones for veteran services when Austin wasn't in the office. Hall said that would at least give coverage for emer- gency calls and eventually the two departments might be able to share a position that combined her depart- ment's expertise in MediCal and the veterans office's knowledge of the vets med- ical system. The supervisors agreed that collaboration between the two departments could allow them to save money without letting anyone fall through the cracks.
