Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Wednesday, July 9, 2014 15B Will Farris Staff Writer For 65 years Taylorsville has hosted the Silver Buckle Rodeo on the Fourth of July. The event gives spectators the chance to watch some world-class athletes romp in 'the dirt for a share of the prize i money. This year was no different and one thing comes ,very clear: if you're the fastidious type the rodeo arena ilis not going to be your thing. Everything begins with the i opening ceremonies where contestants, royalty and flag bearers make a roundabout of ithe arena and finish in a line facing the stands. This year a young lad drove an ATV :around the arena from which ' American flags were draped and moUnted. The machine :was to be raffled offafter a ::future trail event to benefit disabled veterans. : The announcer took this opportunity to speak of freedom, liberty and the great and future state of Jefferson. ':The Jefferson thing went over iwell with the audience. Many ,,folks in the stands voiced their displeasure at '"tyrannical and illogical laws and policies" coming out of Sacramento. The events take place around the chatter of the announcer and the arena clown, who do their best to commiserate with the losers, ':praise the winners and get the icrowd involved. In the steer ,wrestling they came up with :the required training to excel 'at the sport: Mount a imotorcycle, bring it up to fair amount of speed on a country :road and jump offto grab a 'mailbox. It's one thing to jump off a galloping horse and :grab the steer and quite :another to get the thing on the :ground. Every event brings its own form of danger, except perhaps the breakaway roping. Team roping requires that a calf be roped by its head and both rear feet and it's : .z Topsoil & Topsoil, Manure Eight seconds don't sound like much four-legged whirlwind. Only one rider buzzer. One learns after watching the bronc riding that if space appears between the cowboy's butt and the horse's back that the rider will soon be in the dirt. Even barrel racing has perils. Contestants must round three barrels at top speed in somewhere around 17 seconds. Horse and rider must be completely in sync. Sometimes a horse will Peter M. It can't be a 10t of fun having a thousand-pound horse land on you. The biggest event in any rodeo is'the bull riding. Contestants have to mount these ill-tempered, 2,000-pound beasts and hang on with one hand for eight seconds. It's not so much the up and down that gets these guys as it is those sudden turns. Nobody in Friday's event managed to hang on for the required time. All told it is a great way to spend the afternoon: Not only do spectators get to watch the humans perform but their well-trained and disciplined horses add that much more to show. A sideshow is the performance of the pickup riders. These riders and their horses are responsible for sudden twists and turns. OK, you jumped off the horse, got ahold of the critter, now all you gotta do is convince him to lie down. picking up contestants and corralling all the critters that are left after they have been roped, tied, ridden and wrestled. One of the riders was severely kicked by a bronc while attempting to remove the bucking strap. Bow-Wow at NakomaGol .......
