IOA Wednesday, July 14, 2010 Feather River Bulletin I Linda Satchwell Staff Writer Thanks to some creative thinking by Plumas District Hospital's Chief Nursing Offi- cer Linda Jameson and Tiffany Leonhardt, the foun- dation's marketing manager, the hospital will soon have five personal digital assis- tants, handheld digital de- vices loaded with applica- tions that are the equivalent of a large bookshelf's worth of medical information. The nurses' station will have three PDAs, and the emergency room and recov- ery room will each have one. The device is not only small, but also smart. Nurses can input up to 30 different drugs and that genius of a PDA will figure out if there are any dangerous drug in- teractions, right at a patient's bedside. It also provides dosing in- formation for pediatric pa- tients. When a nurse enters the weight and the medica- tion, the PDA provides the proper dose. If a patient comes in with a foreign body obstruction for example, something stuck in the throat the PDA tells what equipment is needed, and it provides techniques and diagrams. One application, a Spanish medical guide, can actually talk.
