8A Wednesday, July 16, 2014 Feather River Bulletins Stone & Straw to play at Farmers' Market July Hannah Hepner Special to Feather Publishing Quincy Certified Farmers' Market has the mission of hosting an event that facilitates the expression of local art and culture. This Thursday, July 17, the market welcomes Rob and Heidi Steen, of Chester, along with Chris Retallack, of Quincy, and Holly Sternberg, from Cromberg, who together make up Stone & Straw. Rob sings; plays banjo, mandolin and guitar; and writes original songs for the group's album. Heidi sings 'and plays mandolin, while Chris plays upright bass and Holly plays fiddle. Influenced by Allison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, Charlie Sizemore and the Dixie Beeliners, the group performs original bluegrass, folk and a variety of new bluegrass as well. Providing entertainment at 6 p.m., during Stone & Straw's intermission, will be the Bombastic Strings: fiddlers Jamison, 6, Kiena Rose, 9, and Jacek Van Pelt, 13. Each Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. farmers, crafters, hot meals and live music are at the corner of Church and Main streets in downtown Quincy. The farmers' market has a full schedule of entertainment throughout the summer. A calendar of events can be found at QuincyFarmersMarket.org. For more information about the market, including the benefits matching program, call 487-4386. In its 15th year of operation, Quincy Certified Farmers' Market remains committed to rural food security. In addition to being a lively social event, the farmers' market has a mission to promote local, sustainable agriculture and community health, and to energize the economy by fostering the exchange of high-quality, regional products. At a "certified" market, farmers sell their crops directly to the public. Elimination of packing, shipping and wholesale costs means both the farmer and consumer have the opportunity to save money, while exchanging the freshest possible products. Among the many challenges of establishing commercial crops in mountain regions is access to markets. Quincy Certified Farmers' Market is one outlet created to meet that need. Since 2000, customers shopping at the farmers' market have been directly supporting local food producers. These producers are individuals who work hard, foster healthy landscapes, grow a variety of produce and often miss out on government subsidies. Consumers, therefore, have the privilege of keeping local growers in operation with consistent patronage. This year the farmers' market has teamed up with the public health department to make the farmers' nutritious produce available to more members of the community. CalFresh, WIC and Senior Nutrition Program participants are getting their benefits matched dollar for dollar. With this program, households most in need of The Thursday farmers" market in Quincy is in full summer swing July 10. Folks shop for fresh produce, crafts, prepared foods, shaved ice and more.
