Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, July 30, 2014 S.. Plumas Motor Supply is the proud owner of a brand new 12-panel solar electric array that supplies approximately one-third of the store's electricity needs. From left: Feather River Solar Electric owner Bill Battagin, Beth Cammack and Plumas Motor Supply owner Ed Cammack. Photos by [aura Beaton Store gets cutting-edge solar electric system Laura Beaton Staff Writer Ibeaton@plumasnews,com Using the sun's energy for power is nothing new .... heat from the sun has been captured for centuries for many uses: drying food and laundry, making sun tea, cooking food in solar ovens and growing food in greenhouses are just afew. Tile advances in'solar electric technology have made solar power more affordable than ever. It is a renewable and efficient energy source and one of the fastestgrowmg renewable energy technologies around. So it comes as no surprise that Quincy business owner Ed Cammack deemed the time right to have a solar electric system installed on the roof of Plumas Motor Supply. Given that the business is housed in a Quonset hut, the slanted roof awning that fronts Lawrence Street makes a perfect place to install 12 solar panels. "It's neat technology," Cammack said. "I'm very interested in it. It's a viable option, iPs a good time to buy it's a long-term investment. How can you go wrong?" Feather River Solar Electric owner Bill Battagin has been in the solar business for abont 25 years. He says the technology keeps getting better and better. Battagin sold and installed :the 3.3-kilowatt system to Cammack in mid-July. H e likens the cost of the system to an additional $10 electric payment per month for 10 "It's neat technology. I'm very interested in it. It's a viable option, it's a good time to buy - it's a long-term investment. How can you go wrong?" Ed Camrnack Plumas Motor Supply Owner years. After that, Battagin said, the system will be paid off and Cammack will enjoy another 20 years of service at virtually no cost. Due to the limited suitable roof space at Plumas Motor Supply, the new system supplies on average about one-third of Cammack's daily energy use, Battagin said. Over the course of a year, the system will provide an average of 20 kilowatt-hours per day, he said. The power goes into the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. grid via an inverter, and at the height of the sun's power, will make the meter stop, Battagin said. Many residential homeowners with solar electric systems can actually see their electric meters run backwards, Battagin said. Another great feature of the system Battagin installed is the top-of-the-line inverter. He says it can provide power to the store even if PG&E experiences a power outage, as long as the sun is shining. Battagin said the ifwerter is the only one on the market that can do so. Cammack is buying his system and financing it through Battagin at a fLxed rate for 10 years, Battagin said. He said Cammack went for a practical, easy installatfon option and if he likes it down the road they can consider adding something else, such as a more practical ground "mount. But for now, Cammack is a happy new customer, and Battagin says he has helped one more client solve his energy needs with renewable, efficient energy. Cammack and Battagin agree it's a win for both men and the environment. For more informatior on Feather River Solar Electric, Google that name, call 284-7849 or go to frenergy.net.
