The pigs are really spoiled, Heather said. They are fed, kept clean, walked and talked to for so long. Then they are abandoned with their food dumped into the dirt. The butcher comes to get them later: Even with the sadness at the end, Morn still thinks that raising pigs is a great project for children, because they learn how to be responsible. She paid for all the feed and supplies tbr her daughters, and all the auction money has been put into special sav- ings accounts for college. "I probably would have spent it on junk anyway," Heather said about the money she wanted to spend back in the beginning. Now she is thankful her mother made them save it. Splenda runs around the yard shak- ing her head as if in agreement. "I'm going to miss the pigs next year," Consuelo said with a sad smile. Well, maybe not the disrupted flower beds the pigs love to root around in. Heather slowly leads Splenda between the daisies back to her pen. They have another two weeks to have fun in the sun in 2001.
