Feather River Bulletin Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 11A In honor of breasffeeding mothers throughout the world, Aug. 1 - 7 has been designated World Breastfeeding Week. The focus message is: "Breastfeeding, A Winning Goal for Life!" This theme emphasizes the importance of increasing and sustaining the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. To celebrate and contribute to this message, the Mountain Interagency Lactation Coalition team, in collaboration with UG Davis Human Lactation Center, Plumas County Public Health Agency and Plumas District Hospital, is hosting a lactation training for health care professionals and paraprofessionals. The training will be free of charge and is scheduled to take place at Plumas District Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 27, 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The morning session will focus on feeding behaviors and breastfeeding, lunch session will be grand rounds with hospital staff and the afternoon session will focus on the challenges of breastfeeding and positive interactions for success. For baby --Developmental benefits: Breasffed babies have improved brain and nervous system development. --Nutritional benefits: Breast milk contains the most complete and optimal mix of nutrients that keep pace with a growing baby's needs. --Always ready: Breast mi]k is the right temperature, is not subject to mixing errors, contains the perfect components, has no recalls and is in proper supply. --Health benefits: Breast milk reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, and protects against many common illnesses such as respiratory and ear infection, asthma and allergies. For mom --Breasffeeding is easy and convenient. --Breastfeeding burns an additional 500 calories per day, which may help with weight loss. --Reduces risk of breast, ovarian, endometrial cancers and anemia. --Prevents against osteoporosis and hip fractures later in life. Facts about MILC The Mountain Interagency Lactation Coalition is comprised of professionals from Lassen, Sierra and Plumas counties and is committed to promoting and supporting breastfeeding in local areas. Meetings are held quarterly. Currently the group is working on creating a unified message that can be delivered to pregnant and postpartum women by all area health care entities.
