14la Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Ann Powers Staff Writer apowers@plumasnews.com Black cats are misunderstood way too often, according to Plumas County Animal Shelter Supervisor Melissa Bishop. That's why she's hoping National Black Cat Appreciation Day, Aug. 17, will help turn things around for the dark-hued felines. "The black cats are the last to go and I don't know why," said Bishop, noting black dogs are often overlooked as : well. "So, they're here the longest." She added the longest the shelter has cared for a black cat before being adopted was 366 days. "Black cats are just as friendly as any other cat," explained Bishop. "I've had several of my own." The ASPCA backs Bishop's quest to dispel the myths and mystery plaguing black cats. "Due to outdated and incorrect myths and superstitions, black cats have a really hard time getting adopted," states the organization's website. "We hope you will join us in celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day by heading to your local shelter and bring home a black cat this weekend." ASPCA officials list several reasons to adopt a coal-colored cat, including: Black cats go with everything and they'll never go out of style. You can tell your kids you adopted a miniature panther. Their fur won't show on your little black dress. In several cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck. Bishop said there are several black cats currently "The black cats are the last to go and I don't know why. So, they're here the longest."
