2C Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014 Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Gary Coe, president of Kokanee Power, holds up the biggest fish he caught at this year's Fish for a Wish derby at Lake Almanor on Aug. 9. Part of the proceeds of this year's event went to Kokanee Power to help pay for some of the food given to the Almanor Fishing Association's fish-caging program. Anglers line up to weigh in their catches at the Fish for a Wish derby. Though the weather was warmer than in some years, one large fish after another was plopped down on the scales. Photos by James Wilson Derby helps make dreams a reality James Wilson Sports Editor sports@plum asnews.com It was a win-win situation for everyone involved in the Fish for a Wish derby held at Big Cove Resort on the west shore of Lake Almanor last Saturday morning. The event gave more than 80 anglers the opportunity to spend a day out on the lake with a rod and reel in their hands, and raised a substantial amount for Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area and the Almanor Fishing Association's fish hatchery program. The annual event entered its 10th year last weekend, and proved to be more relevant than ever before. The derby raised enough money to help grant the wishes of five children with terminal illnesses, and raised a good chunk of change tb help purchase food for AFA's cage-rearing program. For the last few years, the AFA has received support from the nonprofit Kokanee Power. As fish food prices escalated, more money was needed. The partnership between Fish for a Wish and Almanor Fishing Association will help improve the fish population in Lake Almanor, subsequently boosting the tourist industry. Contestants in the derby competed to land the largest bag limit of three trout or salmon, and the biggest brown trout, rainbow trout or salmon. Participants were allowed to compete in teams• Doug Neal and Rod Overstreet placed first in the trout and salmon Category, with a total catch of 14.6 pounds. The team of Ryan Crawford, Ray Crawford, Anthony Humpas and Mark Howell placed second with 9.17 pounds• Wes Morgan and Justin Morgan took third, weighing in at 8.59 pounds. In the junior category, Sam Wesloh placed first with his 6.38-pound brown trout. With that fish, Wesloh also won the biggest fish prize for the brown-trout category• Aiden Shepard placed second in the junior category with his 4.61-pound salmon, with which he also won the biggest salmon prize• Zach Wesloh placed third with a 3.99-pound rainbow trout. The second-place overall team took the biggest rainbow trout prize, with a 4.7-pounder. After weighing in, participants were treated to a big meal during the awards ceremony. An auction took place afterward, with some major prizes bought and more money raised for Make-A-Wish. To date, Fish for a Wish has raised over $400,000 for Make-A-Wish. Displayed at the event was a board filled with photos of 29 children whose wishes the Fish for a Wish derby raised money to grant. Many of the children's wishes were destination based. Photos of recipients at Disneyland, Legoland, Greece and Ireland were scattered on the board. • L Other wishes granted included meeting Justin Bieber, riding in a NASCAR race car with Travis Pastrana, hang gliding and trying out for a Major League Baseball team.
