4A Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014 Feather River Bulletin PUSD announces Fresh Start Program Because of ongoing challenges with outstanding lunch account balances, Plumas Unified School District is offering all families with an outstanding balance as of Aug. 13 a one-time-only option to participate in the Fresh Start Program. This year only, 50 percent of such balances may be forgiven if families complete a 2014-15 free and reduced-price meal application and submit it with their payment. The application and payment are due to the food services office by Sept. 30. District personnel understand that large balances owed may be difficult to pay in full so they urge affected families to take advantage of this one-time-only opportunity. Those who continue to accrue charges without making payments will have their accounts referred to the Plumas Unified School District Collections Department. Personnel strongly encourage payments be made by check, as it is the safest way to ensure the correct payment gets applied to the student's account. Requests for help in Calculating the 50 percent rate may be directed to the food services department. The department wants to help bring all accounts up to date as quickly as possible. The 2014-15 free and reduced-price meal application can be downloaded at pcoe.kl2.ca.us/freelunch or picked up at either the district office or the front office of any school. ROSBY District to offer free and reduced meals Plumas Unified School District and Plumas County Office of Education is announcing its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. The district office and each school has a copyof the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The household size and income criteria identified in the accompanying table will be used to determine eligibility for free, reduced-price or full-price meal benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Children who receive food stamp, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs)I Kinship Guardianship Assistance Payments (Kin-GAP) or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits are automatically eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household in which they reside. Eligibility for a foster child is based on a separate application and solely on the amount of the child's "personal use" income. To apply for free or reduced-price meal benefits, households must complete an application and return it to the school for processing. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. The information households provide on the application will be used to determine meal eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by school or program officials. For households that do not list a food stamp, CalWORKs, KIn-GAP or FDPIR case number, the application must include the names of all household members, the amount and source of the income received by each household member, and the signature and corresponding Social Security number of an adult household member. Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price meal policy, the determining officials, as designated by the Plumas Unified School District, shall review applications and determine eligibility. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the eligibility ruling may discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. Parents may also make a formal request for an appeal hearing of the decision and may do so orally or in writing with Plumas Unified School District's hearing official. Parents or guardians should contact the district office for specific information regarding the name of the determining official and/or hearing official. If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household's income falls to or below the levels shown. Households that receive CalFresh (food stamp), CalWORKs, Kin-GAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or FDPIR benefits may not have to complete an application for free or reduced-price meals. School officials will determine eligibility for free meals based on documentation obtained directly from the CalFresh, CalWORKs, Kin-GAP, TANF or FDPIR office that a child is a member of a household currently receiving CalFresh or FDPIR benefits or an assistance unit receiving CalWORKs or Kin-GAP benefits. School officials will notify households of their eligibility, but those who do not want their child(run) to receive free meals must contact the school. CalFresh, CalWORKs, Kin-GAP, TANF or FDPIR households should complete an application if they are not notified of their eligibility by Aug. 29. The fundraiser was scheduled to end in September; however, Beavers' injuries have made it impossible for him to return to work. Beavers, a Ferrellgas technician, suffered second- and third-degree burns on June 2 after a routine gas tank exchange resulted in a massive explosion. The tragic event prompted community members to host fundraising events and set up donation accounts to aid in his recovery. Beavers has been using the donations to pay for medical garments not covered by the Division of Workers' Compensation. Only two-thirds of his lost wages are covered, and according to his mom, Denise Sassman, Beavers will soon be relying on donations to help him cover his daily expenses. Beavers does not know when he will be physically capable of returning to work. Donations can be made online by searching for Beavers' name at giveforward.com, or by emailing his mom at blondedj_1961@yahoo .com. Sassman and Beavers thanked the communities of Lassen and Plumas counties for all their support during this difficult time. "It is so heart-warming to see the community come forward and help my son," said Sassman. "David and the family feel truly blessed. Being a single mom there is only so much financial assistance I can extend, and the community has helped lift some of the weight from naY,shoulders i so I can concenfrate on helping him through his recovery."
