Published FRB, IVR, PR, CP Aug. 27, 20141 1 CLICK AWAY urges HPV awareness Edie O'Connor Special to Feather Publishing Human papilloma virus is a virus that can cause very serious health problems. Besides being the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, HPV is also the most common STI seen in the Plumas County public health clinic. There are abott 40 different strains of HPV, and some types have been identified as the cause of health problems, including genital warts and cervical, penile and throat and mouth (oropharyngeal) cancers. However, there are effective vaccines that canprevent these health problems from happening. In the U.S., there are an estimated 24 million active cases and 5.5 million new cases of HPV each year, according to the National Cancer Institute, with a number of HPV strains causing a great majority of cases of cervical cancer. Despite this fact, public ignorance about HPV is high. Recent studies have shown that there are high levels of HPV infection among women, with the highest levels among young women, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One recent study among female college students indicated that an average of 14 percent become infected with genital HPV each year. Levels of current infection in men of the same age appear to be similar. How is HPV spread? EIP/$s Wlcally spread by direct skin,to-skin contact. According to Dr. Marshall Posner, director of the Head and Neck Oncology Center at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan and HPV cancer researcher, HPV is transmitted by "having contact with skin flakes with the HPV virus on it -- primarily through sexual transmission... But it can be transmitted from fingers, saliva, genitalia. Any kind of intimate physical contact will transmit the virus." According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 70 percent of American adults 18 and older have never heard of HPV. Furthermore, most (89 percent) have never discussed the issue with their health provider. Although cases of HPV are not formally reported in the United States, available data from the CDC indicate that at least 75 percent of the reproductive-age population has been exposed to sexually transmitted HPV. Despite their potential severity, the health consequences of HPV (and other STIs) often are hidden and can occur years after infection. Thus, marly people do not know that they are infected or that they can pass the virus on to others. What is the HPV vaccine? The HPV vaccine Gardasil can prevent all types of cancers caused by HPV. It is important for young people to receive the vaccine long before the potential of becoming sexually active, as it will not protect against any strain of the disease a person has already been exposed to. Even if a person has only one lifetime partner later in adulthood, that partner could have been previously exposed and carry the virus. The CDC recommends both girls and boys be given the vaccine series at ages 11 and 12. Older men and women may also receive the vaccine through age 24. Although the FDA See HPV, page 13B
