Bulletin, Record, Progressive, Reporter Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014 1B This 1957 Chevrolet is featured in the artwork for the 28th annual Street Rod Extravaganza event T-shirt. The car, which belonged to Chester rodder Bob Merriman, who died Dec. 7, 2013, will be displayed prominently, and with great sentiment, during the event in Chester on Sept. 5 - 6. Photo submitted "1 For the love of cars: A short history of the event M. Kate West Staff Writer chesternews@plumasnews.com In keeping with tradition, the 28th annual Street Rod Extravaganza will be held in the Chester Park on Sept. 6, the Saturday immediately following the Labor Day weekend. This event has always been held in the pastoral setting of mountain oaks and cool, green lawns along the North Fork Feather River where the Chester Park has always been the "wild card' that has stacked the deck and assured the ongoing popularity of this annual event. The premiere event draw has always been the afternoon "Cruise Around Lake Almanor" poker run that offers a driving tour of 35 miles of lake views, flora, wildlife and scenic mountain vistas. Street Rod Extravaganza draws an average of 125 participants each year, although past registration records put the all-time high attendance at 250 entries. The begtnninlg ............ "The Street Rod Extravaganza began as a vision of Chester resident and Plumas County Deputy SheriffTom Turkington, who was also a founding member of the local Sierra Cascade Street Rodders Club," said 25-year judge Rick Trebes. He said the first event in 1985 was a solo effort pulled off by Turkington with the assistance of a few volunteers. The second year the event was opened to cars and trucks up through the year 1964. Turkington's solo event management became a team effort when he was jointed by fellow club members spouses Rick and Pam Trebes, Red and Sandy Meyers, J.J. and Paula Johnson and Dan and Vicki Bickle. "As a team we continued to improve upon and offer the annual car show up until we reached our 10th anniversary in 1995," Rick Trebes said. Rolling forward At that time the volunteers passed the baton of the annual Street Rod Extravaganza into the hands of the Lake Almanor Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. Due to the heavy smoke of local wildfires, the Street Rod Extravaganza was not hosted in 2012 or 2013. This year, Street Rod Extravaganza has a new home with the Almanor Recreation and Park District. ARPD's partnership with the Lake Almanor Street Rodders has resulted in a format that is sure to excite rodders and participants alike. LASR coordination team members are chairman Mark Stefani, Jean Stefani, Bud and Jan Bosworth, Bruce Carlson and Eric Rudgers.
